Okay, guys running Win98SE, on a Soyo SY6-VBA-133 board. Had it for almost a year, stable and reliable. I did a re-boot last Saturday.. I wnated to plug in a SCSI drive that ran way hot in the summer. (Its really cold now 🙂) It was already installed and running in my system. After the reboot all I got were long slow beeps. Not even a POST. Nothing, just a blank screen. I unpluged card by card, until all that was left in the system was the video card, a Savage 4. Still nothing. Put in a 300a, P2-333, nothing. So, 2 hours later I'm getting a bit annoyed. (I have LOTS of patience, usually.) So now I'm thinking the MB is bad. I pull out the SOYO and put in a brand-new MSI-6182 ver 1.1 i810 based board. Thinking well its something!
Great it posts!!! It loads Windows into safe mode so I can begin to install the i810 based video driver, then it locks up.

F**k. Re-boot, like I've never done that before! If I ever hear that MS 98 music agin I'll personally whack Mr. Gates head off! 🙂)

Now this time it hangs at 23% through scandisk. ****!

16% through scandisk it hangs again. Now it gets to Loading Windows 98, and I'd LOVE to hear that Microsoft Theme!

I take all cards out of the system, same thing. It locks with the HDD light glowing, and just agfter verifying DMA. Okay my sweet IBM drive is shot too! I pull out and old Quantum 4.3 bigfoot, let the BIOS see it, same thing.... Hangs on load , then in Scandisk. I pull out a 7.0 gig Maxtor, same thing. Hangs in the same place. I swap out my two Dimms.... They're fine. Guys, any ideas!? Questions? I wish Anands would let me pick my own password, I've got no idea what it was so I've had to re-register since all was stored on that drive.

The one common demonatior is that according to your post you have swaped many things but have not swaped the Power Supply. They can be very hard to trouble shoot. I would say that you should try another p/s. It's worth a try. I have a hard time beliving 3 hard drives, 2 motherboards, and ram can cause the same problem.
 
You may want to check your switches on the front of your case. Yes, that is right - I had the same thing happen a couple of years back and it turned out there was something wrong with one of the microswitches on the front of the case. BTW, was the system unplugged when you added that SCSI drive back in? Could be ESD if you did not. Good luck in your diagnosis.

I was about to deal with the power supply, and on a lark I just reassembled the old set-up. What do yo know... POST, and a boot-up. I screamed with delight. I'm still not sure what screwed it up in the first place. But I am not complaining.

Too bad I would have been my out for an AMD/TBird-900 set-up. That'll have to wait till after Christmas now. 🙂
