I like to write checks, just to piss off all the people behind me in line.

:)

You know whats worse than that?

Old women.

Old women that pay with cash.

They are in front of you in the line at the supermarket spaced out on whatever tranks the doctor is giving out at the moment or possibly suffering from mild dementia. Theyre shopping gets run through and the till girl/guy askss for payment and they have this moment of panic, like they didnt know it was going to happen and they frantically start searching for their handbag and then go digging through 10 years of receipts and vouchers and tissues and crap to find their purse. Why the fuck wouldn't you get that out earlier, its not like you weren't expecting to need it. Then they need to be told the sodding amount several times and insist on trying to "help out" by giving the exact change which takes 10 fucking times as long as if they'd just thrown a few notes down. And after that they try to have a little chat with the till guy/girl who obviously also just wishes they would fuck off and let him/her get on with their job.

And then they turn to you and say "sorry to keep you, you weren't in a hurry were you?" Me, oh no, I like standing here watching you waste your ever decreasing life expectancy, its not like the rest of the world has shit it needs to get done.

*and breath slowly*

I hate those people so much. If you don't have a credit card or a bank card by the time you're 20 or maybe 25, it's time to give suicide some serious consideration.

I know ATOT is full of fucktards but this is one of the lowest that I might have witnessed yet. Just posting the above has serious issues and is just plain sad...and what's worse is that I don't know if you people are serious or not. Wouldn't surprise me either way.

Shakes head at some of the people today....

I look down on people paying with cash.

I look down on people paying with debit.

I want to beat people paying with checks.

I pretty much think anyone not paying with a CC is a fool.

:/

lol I don't about debit but cash for anything over $20 and yeah I think they are weird.

Anyone who pays with a check deserves to be shot (if it's less than $500).

Is 5% off gas measly? Is 3% of groceries measly? No, its not, you are just trying to make it seem as if the rewards are minuscule when in fact they are not.

I often do computer side jobs for cash, I'm glad you laid out that scenario. Here is what I do:

1. Deposit cash in my bank.
2. Spend money on CC
3. Pay off CC and collect rewards

It's such a "waste" to drive to my bank. Heavens, that 400 meter drive is brutal! And that 20 seconds I wait to see a teller....

Good. Since you do this "often", I'm sure you declare that as income. If you don't, in case of an audit, you have a paper trail that shows all these regular deposits that add up to quite a bit of cash. You can't quite use "my gramma gave me that money for my birthday" too many times if an auditor starts asking questions about "often" deposits of a large amount of cash.

What's that? It's not a large amount of cash? If that's the case, then I'm glad you're so proud of yourself for wasting even a short amount of time at the bank just to save a dollar.

But Nick would never pay taxes. That's for socialists.

Looking at that card, I see "5% cash back on up to $1500 spent in bonus categories each quarter". $500 a month is not very much to me. We get back more than $50 per month with Chase amazon rewards between 3% on amazon orders and 1% on everything else. I looked a long time to find a good rewards card. I always look at others, just in case there's something better.

I use the Freedom for small purchases under $10 and a Fidelity 2% rewards for most other purchases.
For household expenses we have a Citi Forward, 5pt/dollar on Amazon and restraraunts, and a PremierPass Elite, 2pt/dollar for gas and supermarkets plus 1pt/mile when we fly (PremierPass is going away so I need to rethink my everyday card).

I've been thinking about getting the Target card for 5% back at Target, I don't shop there a lot but they are adding groceries to nearest one so depending on prices and selection I might start shopping there. Currently I do all my shopping at Giant Eagle since I get 20cents off per gallon of gas with every $50 spent on groceries, and 1% off groceries with every 10gallons of gas.

playing devil's advocate... how exactly do you manage to pay the CC off? if you use billpay, that's using a check, albeight an electronic one.

if you have a mortgage or car loan, most of those do not allow you to pay with CC. property taxes if paid separately usually are not CC able without surcharges. utilities are similar too in my experience.

My CC's are automatically paid in full when due via an electronic transfer (not the bank's billpay service).

I pay with my debit card all the time because it has better rewards than my CC. I get hundreds of dollars in rewards every year. Speaking of which, I need to check and see if I have another gift card coming. :D
I got $900 in cash back from one Amex card last year--and I shopped conservatively.

I enjoy heckling slow check writers (especially dudes) to see if I can get a laugh out of the cashier and other people in the lines. Favorites are, "Hey speedy, you writing a novel up there? Oh wait, you're paying with a check, do people still do that?" "Are you on some reality show where you have to live a 1980s lifestyle? Because I don't think they had (insert some products they're buying.)"

Sadly I can't do this at the commissary on base, because I might piss off the wrong guy. :D

sounds more like immature rude behavior to me than comedy. I mean no one likes slow check writers or anyone slow in line but waiting is a part of life, be adult about it and wait your turn or leave to shop earlier.

That's why places like Walmart use registers that fill in the checks for you. Hell, some don't even need anything but the check and just run it through (without information on it) and give it back. Scans the number on the bottom of the check and electronically moves the money to the retailer.

Funny, for all the complaints about check writers, many took just about as long as the average credit card/debit card user when I was a cashier. Plus, you had all the idiot card users that couldn't figure out which way to swipe their card. Then they had to navigate the oh-so-difficult menu...

Whatever. I don't see the need to harp on people for the method of payment they choose to use. But if it helps you feel better than other people, well, good for you, I guess.

interesting question, i looked it up. it's a tenuous position that hasnt been directly clarified by the IRS. some CC (penfed gas card) uses the term rebate in the terms and conditions. and the wording of others say cash back, implying rebate as well. rebates from what i've read are considered price reductions and not subject to taxation. the irs had made a ruling that frequent flier miles were not taxable when redeemed and also posted a letter response to the donation of card rewards
http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-wd/0228001.pdf
seems to say that you get the benefit of both worlds. choose to donate to charity and you may get to deduct the amount. the generation of reward is also not considered for gross income.

all and all, it's not totally clear but i'd say you have a significant chance of defending oneself if asked by the irs whether your card reward is considered income. i'd be more worried about the claiming of sales tax for out of state internet purchases being levied, though they'll probably just make the companies charge tax to make things easier than forcing the tax filers to provide proof.

I was about to post something similar. Cash back is not taxed, it's effectively a price reduction. I use my 2% card for absolutely everything I can, aside from 12 1.00 purchases per month to satisfy my rewards checking account requirements. I've paid 0% interest on this card as well.

I, too, intentionally get into altercations just so I can physically assault people. It's the ATOT way of life.
