I'm a newbie. What's normal CPU temperature?

I just got an Athlon Thunderbird 1Gightz. My temperature is around 46 degrees C. I'm using a really big fan/heatsink. Is that safe/normal?

the actual kill temp on that t-bird is 90 degrees. You can run it at 60 without any problems/lockups, but it will lessen the cpu's life. 46 degrees sounds very good for that gigger, especially without any exotic cooling.

Nih,

If you could measure core temp, your statement would be accurate. Certain heatsinks(IE Orbs) exhibit strange behaviors-- All socket-thermsitor readings are lower than core temp. Compensation helps, but high-overclocks still nullify the compensation.

SOcket-thermistor Versus Core temp

So depending on your readings, your core temp could be very significantly higher(20-25C at times). So a "reading" temp of 50-55C is the highest I would push it since they are inaccurate, and at high overclocks have higher-errors.

Wow, Mikewarrior2, That's a bigger difference than I realized. Thanks for the info, now i'm curios how 2cooltek makes out with the tests. And it really sheds some light on the performance (or lack of) of the Chrome Orb!
