I'm a MAN - I overclocked my CPU 10MHZ!

Ok, sarcasm aside.

I have a standard (non t-bird) Athlon 700mhz processor with an Asus K7V mobo. I posted on k7v.com with really annoying boot up problems (computer just hangs - no displays on monitors, no nothing). Then next time I boot up, it goes right into the BIOS and tells me I have the wrong "external cpu setting" - I didn't even change anything...I used the default settings so I don't know what's wrong - anyone know?

Anyway, here's the post on k7v.com:
http://www.k7v.com/forum/k7v/data/10855.shtml

One guy suggested that I set the FSB to 103 and I did - boot up problem seemed to be solved. With that new setting, the Athlon was at 721Mhz and that worried me about the CPU frying...so I bumped it down to 101mhz for the FSB and now the Athlon is 710mhz. I have a decent heatsink and fan - should I worry about my processor overheating? Is 10mhz over the norm all that much to worry about?

I overclocked my father-in-laws computer by 6 MHz. Of course, it was a 60 Hz Pentium which is now a 66 Hz Pentium running Win95. 10% overclock just by setting a jumper on the Gateway motherboard. :p

Thats a massive 1.4% Overclock. Well within tollorences I'd say. Most CPU's have at least 10% in them

You'd have more chance of the CPU popping out of the slot and into a ready heated pan and then frying, than it frying due to the imcrease in speed.

You have an asus board they are know for using a 101 bus anyway (i.e their 100 setting is out just a little-giving a marginal increase in benches)

No you have nothing to worry about. I have a 2.4 GHz P4 running at 2.88 with the stock Intel Heatsink, and I am not worried in the least about overheating. You will be in no danger of shortening the life of your CPU as long as you don't add voltage to it.

Damn I'm so mad. Just when I thought increasing the FSB would make my system more stable, it is now showing the same problems again: won't boot right at first, then says I have the wrong external CPU speed setting. The FSB is currently at 101mhz, if I bump it to 103, I still have nothing to worry about, right? With the 103 setting, my 700Mhz Athlon would be 721.

Is that a slot Athlon? or socket? Cause I have a Duron 700 socket A that runs fine at 750... had some major problems at 766 though...

my p4 is overclocked 50%, and i've never had an issue. it was fine even when i was using the stock heatsink. i wouldn't worry about 10 mHz :). crank that sucker up! you'll know when your chip has had it long before you would be in danger of frying it. just go slow and test it with Prime95 every time you increase the speed. you should really crack the CPU package open and install a goldenfingers unit. of course, many would argue whether it is really worth bothering with a slot A processor. however, i think the hands on stuff is fun :).

that isn't necessarily true.

it is if it's only 10 MHz...
Asus boards add sometimes more than 10MHz by default that you cannot even see... they are never below the speed they are rated at.. dont think it hurts the CPU.

the original comment about CPU life was regarding overclocking in general, not just this particular 10 mHz overclock.

Some motherboards actually overclock the CPU this much by default. It is absolutely nothing to worry about. If you CPU can't handle 10MHz over stock speeds, then it shouldn't have passed quality control.

Could the original problem be related to a failing Mobo battery? Just wondering, as it seems to lose the CPU speed....,but then again the CPU would set it straight again...Hmmm, just thinking this through on my keyboard.....

I think, too, that the problem could be the failing motherboard battery.

Try to replace it.
