I'm a little foggy here, what program lets me select startup items one by one?

I thought it was System Information, but I can only get it to display each startup item, it won't let me modify whether or not they're to be included in the startup. The program also let you select what to include in the win.ini and so forth... Can someone refresh my memory? Thanks!

May be you are thinking of msconfig.
It lets you see all the startup programs. It also lets you disable them, but for diagnostics only.

It is not recommended to use msconfig to disable startup programs.

One thing I do really like about XP is that you can clean that MSconfig up. If you have entries in there still from programs which are no longer installed you can go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\state and delete the invalid entries so that they no longer show up. I'm pretty sure I wasn't able to do that in 98se.

Try Startup Machanic. It gives information on each entry and organises all entries in categories (essential, usefull, useless, harmless). It even scans for new entries on every startup and warn you if it finds anything. Google for it🙂

Also try startup control panel, a small exe program that lists startups from many sources and allows you to select or deselect each. Nice troubleshooting tool.
