The lower the carat/karat on gold the less actual gold correct? How low do you have to go before it's considered "cheap", not worth buying?

I would say don't get anything less than 14k, but that's just my amateur opinion.

so 12 carat would be half gold

18 is 3/4 Au

24 would be pure Au

Some people are sensitive to different purity extremes. Find out from a source other than the person you are buying it for whether those apply.
