I'm thinking I'm going to make my own computer, but im on a really low bugdet, what i need help on is, i really don't know anythingh about motherboads or CPUs, whether to get an AMD or Intel, but what i really want is a combo package though, a CPU that comes with a motherboard, all i want is my system is to run Half life 2 decently, make it look really nice, really nice graphics and stuff, as of now all my computer stuff is old, i have a intel celeron 1.2 GHz, 40 Gb hardrive, ATi radeon 7500. What im about to get from a friend is a radeon 9000 pro, or this other Nvidia card, also im thinking about getting 1 Gb ddr or whatever i really don't know i ahve 128 right now, i just need a lot of help, just help me choose a good ddr, CPU & motherboard, and what ever else i need:eek:

So you're only looking for a motherboard, CPU, and memory? Your case is standard?

I'm thinking about an Asus K8N motherboard, $90, Athlon 64 3000+ CPU, $135, and 512 value DDR memory, $70, so that's about $300.

might need to budget a PSU as well... LOL

the above post is good.. the K8N is a good board, and the 3000+ is a great value. the RAM can be virtually any brand as long as it's value, because higher end RAM doubles in price easily.

I'd suggest a Mwave bundle consisting of: A64 2800+/3000+, Chaintech VNF-250 and 512MB Crucial DDR 400.

All that comes to $260/$280 depending on what processor you go with.

As CraigRT mentioned, we may also have to budget in a new PSU. What brand is the one that came with your case?

EDIT: "or this other Nvidia card" Do you happen to know what model this Nvidia card is?

You might want to get a job and save some money first. Hate to use all your money on something that won't let you play the latest games.

Edit: NM, I see you have a graphics card already.. In that case I've seen MOBO/CPU combos for $100-150 and you can get value RAM for $140.00 You're set!

Edit: eerrrr... NM again do what Sonic587 said.. looks like a deal to me. :D

Dude, if you live in Fremont go to Frys and get the Semperon 3100+ combo for $159. Then start from there. The sale is good till tomorrow.

Eh?

HL2 is very forgiving to low-end videocards. He should be able to play atleast 800X600 medium textues. I doubt he is expecting a lot more than that after coming from this older PC.

That said, saving up for a better videocard is a good idea, but you don't need a 9800pro to comfortably play HL2.

Not really, I use a 9000 pro, and it runs HL2 at 1024x768 medium settings just fine. You gotta realize that the gfx card is not everything, cuz my cousin has a gf4 ti, but his system is slower than mine, and it runs HL2 ALOT worse.

Sempron 2400+ $63

512MB PC3200 $59.99 + $4.99= $64.98

Total: $330.97

A little over budget, but not much.

Are you joking? I'd stay away from 5xxx cards like the plague, unless you don't mind the abysmal DX9 performance and image quality issues. I'd much rather put my money on a Athlon64 processor and a chipset that has a future, because he can always upgrade the gfx card later on.

Looks good, but you can do a LOT better than that MB/GPU combo.

If you really just want to play HL2 right now, with high detail settings, then that setup is probably the best you can afford. BUT, if you plan on using that system for a longer time, and play games that will come out in the near future, I would seriously invest in a A64 platform, because as much as I like the A7, I would not recommend buying one anymore. You're basically spending money on technology that's quickly becoming obsolete.
