I'm a cheater and dcypher.net caught me...

I was really pissed when I read this line
<< I suggest you find who on your team is doing this before we are forced to take more action then just ban a single person >>

Thunder is right on. How dare you sugest he's a real member of TA. Hell anyone can plug in our # or any other teams for that matter. So what are you goning to do.. ban TA, then what, when he joins another team are you going to ban them too? What are you going to do after all the teams are ban? That's not very logical thinking.

I'm glad to know that all the work we've put into your project is so highly reguarded that your going to pull the plug on us at the first problem.

How about you fix your software so we don't have this problem.... there's a good idea!

Bart

edit: well said Russ and everyone.. this front page smear tactic by D.net is in VERY poor taste!

edit2: I just keep getting more pi$ed.. ya know what, go ahead BAN US, DO IT! I just can't wait for him to join another team just to see what you do then. There are PLENTY of other project that need our help.

(this post is the sole opinion of Bartman all views and opinion expressed in this rant are in now way associated with TA)

charrison,

I understand your desire to "work together here to fix the problem" and I couldn't agree with you more. I'm sure that the active Gamma Flux contributors would like nothing more than to see the whole situation taken care of and ended. However, your words here and the actions of Dcypher.Net/Process Tree, specifically Armin's post to the "news" page appear to be quite contradictory.

You first said to me (and I must say that I did appreciate and understand this viewpoint from you):

<< Unfortunatly I have no way of knowing if this person is a valid team anandtech member, or just some nut trying to sabatoge your stats. >>

and then later in response to other's posts:

<< I could only take block TA stats if i knew with 100% certainty that it was a rogue TA member. And as i have said before, I do not know that. >>

Yet, when I check the news page on Dcypher.Net/Process Tree's site, I still see Armin saying:

<< We contacted Team Anandtech which received these cheated blocks to find and neutralize this misguided person so we will not have to take stronger measures to curb the abuse. >>

Notice that in the far more public venue of this page, there is no mention that the cheater may or may not be affiliated any more with Team Anandtech other than the fact that we all share the common ability to type the numeral 3 into a setup dialogue box. Notice that there is no mention of the fact that more drastic measures will only be taken against Team Anandtech if it's determined that this idiot is part the team.

Instead, the post clearly says that to find and neutralize the cheater, you contacted us. To find and neutralize the cheater you went to the cheater's team.

In my opinion (and my opinion only), one of the first things that Dcypher.Net/Process Tree could do to "work together" with us is to post a follow-up explaining that Team Anandtech has no more knowledge of or information concerning this cheater than you or anyone else does. Otherwise, you can continue to let the animosity of the legitimate members of this team towards Dcypher.Net/Process Tree grow.

Aside from everything else going on, my dcypher client has decided to quit flushing. I have 14 wu done, and its set to flush at 5. It won't flush manually, and gives no error message. I reloaded it to see if it was corrupted, but that didn't fix anything. I'm sitting on a T-1 line that I know is working fine, so thats not the problem. It had been working fine, but for whatever reason, it stopped flushing about 3 hours ago.

For the last time, no one is suggesting that we are going to yank TA stats away.
This will be dealt with as fair as possible. We are doing everything we can do to stop this person, And it is very unfortunate that TA is affected by this.

I by no means wish any disrespect toward TA. You guys have been very supportive of us since the beginning.

Thanks
Chris

Oh.... for pete's sake!! :disgust:

I tried to put it in a well reasoned, logical manner before... here's the short & sweet version:

We don't give a rat's butt about the threat of action to the team's stats, we dang sure DO care about the sullied reputation of our whole team thanks to that news post!!:|

I can't put it any plainer. Unless something new comes along, I'm done with the whole f---ing topic. :disgust:

[EDIT]Okay, here's something new... I just caught your post above. The only thing that changed about that post was that the words "which would include a block on the whole of the Anandtech stats" was removed. What didn't change is the association of Team Anandtech with the cheater.[/EDIT]

Cheater issue Posted November 28 15:17 by Armin

We are working with Team Anandtech on resolving the cheating problem that they unwillingly had a benefit from. I apologize if the honest members of team Anandtech got the impression that I was accusing them of "doping" in any way.

However, the issue is a serious one that in fact draws into doubt the validity of all team and individual stats to some extend. I would assume directing the flames and anger at the real culprit in this situation is more justified than a quarrel between the benevolent parties, being Team Anandtech and DCypher.

Again, apologies to Team Anandtech and the request to bring the discussion back to a cooperative and rational level.

Okay, sounds good! 🙂

I agree, let's now turn our energies towards catching the little bast--d that caused the problem.

If nocharge.com is indeed a local ISP to the Seattle, WA area and we know the IP # and time of day that the bogus work was submitted then we're well on our way to finding him/her. Much of the possible success in the future is going to depend on how strongly nocharge.com feels about their service being used for fraudulent activities. Odds are that THEY can determine more information about the individual with the above info provided to them.

To the Dcypher.Net folks...

I know we have Team Anandtech members that are local to the Seattle area. Would you like to elevate this to the level of some person-to-person interaction with the ISP? Otherwise, I'm sure you guys can provide more info to the ISP about the details via email than any of us. In short, what can we do to help?

One sticking point may be the fact that while nocharge.com DOES require you to fill in detailed user information to start your account, it doesn't look like they use any means to verify the validity of the information provided. If this guy/gal was smart enough to do what he/she did, then they might have also not filled in any of the user info with useful details.

Let us know what we, as a team or as individuals, can do to help and we'll keep the bloodhounds sniffing until the electronic trail goes dry.

I am a little late maybe getting into this fray but.

"I by no means wish any disrespect toward TA. You guys have been very supportive of us since the beginning."

I think this is insufficient and not made in a earnest desire to apologise, you owe the apology to Anand himself as he is the direct "owner" of The team. You have in effect called him a liar and a cheat in a public forum, no less. It may be actionable if Anand were to decide to go this way. If I were Anand I would not allow my name to be involved in any effort to do any work concerning your orginization.

Well, the offesive posting on the DCypher.net news page has been toned down considerably, and I think that I can attribute that the post was originally borne out of frustration and perhaps some translation difficulties on Armin's part. If I remember correctly, English is not his primary language, and sometimes things do not come over the same trying to span cultural and language barriers.

In other words, I probably would have phrased things differently, but there is definitely an apology on the table with the sincere desire to put this behind us.

I am also concerned that the scientific aspect of the Gamma Flux DC project has been violated. We need to remember that there are greater reasons for having these various DC projects than just STATS. Due to the nature of random casting of rays from the storage medium, duplicate results might have an adverse affect on the SCIENTIFIC results. If this is the case, it would be a real tragedy.

Viz:
I agree with you in some respects but it should not only be toned down but a complete retraction of the statement on their front page as to TeamAnandtech and there part in this matter. All of the team has had there character besmirtched by this posting. Not a good thing.

<< One sticking point may be the fact that while nocharge.com DOES require you to fill in detailed user information to start your account, it doesn't look like they use any means to verify the validity of the information provided. >>

Actually, it's worse then that. They use the same logon name and password for everybody, so all you want is a connection, you don't have to give them any information. They are changing this, but that has not happened yet.

Russ:
Seeing your post here really is offensive.
I do not know why up until now no one has taken you to task about the sig you are using. To take something out of the off topic forum and bring it here is WRONG. I am a democrat, and proud of my party. I have gave part of my body to this country I also gave one of my son's to the cause of freedom. The feedom of speech that you so cherish but choose to use in such a hurtfull manner. I am not a thief and I have not chosen to steal anything from you or any other person. I find your abuse of the freedom of speech here in this forum is something that you should consider changing.

[rantmodeon]Ok now why do we have to slander eachother?

And I also believe that Dnet should delete the post slandering TeAm Anandtech. I don't believe that they should "Ban" us all from the project just because they can't find the perpatrator when we did what we could about a different abuser (Phantom Flusher) time and time again when Dnet didn't want to do anything about it. [/rantingmodeoff]

Russ,

Ahhh crap, I saw that little blurb on their web site but evidently I read the date incorrectly. 🙁

It's obvious why the cheater would have chosen this ISP to use for his handiwork then. There's absolutely nothing we or the folks at Dcypher.Net/Process Tree will be able to do to catch him/her.

My suggestion to them is to ban the IP range that nocharge.com uses until they are able to produce a client with securtiy that will make this type of thing far more difficult.
