Texas could be good too as its straight south , but I don't think its as cheap as Florida is right now for a two bedroom two bath. . .

Just thought of a winter getaway and since the market is so depressed I don't think I could lose money in the long term

But I'm totally unfamiliar with Florida or Texas as to what could make a decent vacation property. . . .

Buy in Austin or Dallas and you are good to go, as far as vacation property, not sure people think of Texas when they think of vacation. A lakehouse would be great but Florida is probably your best bet for a vacation house that you would want to rent out.

just getting away from Canadian snow and ice is a vacation.

That said, Texas is a great place according to some friends of my sister.

Lots go to Texas from around here cause its HOT when we are -40F but more interior as opposed to the coast ,Corpus Christi is about 1800 miles from us or 28 hrs straight driving.
I'm not interested in Arizona but its closer.
the wife is concerned about Hurricanes 'Florida' but I can't afford to be right on the shore anyway
A condo a few blocks back walking distance would be fine.
Goglin South Padre

A few blocks back on the Gulf Coast really isn't going to save you any hurricane headaches. Storm surges from even a moderate hurricane can cause problems even a mile inland. To eliminate most of the risk from hurricanes you need to be fairly well (20+ miles) inland. Even then the wind will cause damage, especially if the house is unattended in the summer. Without boarding up, it will sustain damage.

I googled South Padres exposure to huricanes and with climate change it suggests its going to be much more vulnerable to level 2 and 3 canes 🙁

Those things scare land locked prairie boys! the wife too . . . .

Texas doesn't sound like a good idea if you are trying to rent it out, nobody really goes there for vacation. Florida, on the other hand, yes.

Are you familiar with heat + humidity? Because that's what you are getting in Florida and a lot of the Texas coastal areas.

If you are just there for the winters I guess it's not so bad.

Most Canadians who end up in florida are way past their best before date so I'm not surprised.
Heat and humidity is a nice change from -40 and 0% humidity
SC has government problems what I understand ;-)
