I'm a bit confused about the whole Alternative, Rock, NuMetal thing...

First of all, let's try not to bash anything. I'm merely just asking about what type of bands belong in which subgenre. As of now, this is what i think belongs in each of these:

Alternative- Weezer, Hoobastank, 311, Linkin Park
Rock- Metallica
NuMetal- Korn, Disturbed, Slipknot

Would this be correct? Or is there some other way that bands/music are divided?

i thought linkin park was more rock..aand a bit of eveyrthing else? (like pop, hiphop, techno elements in their music)

Alternative no longer exists perse.. Alternative Rock was the, you guessed it, "alternative" bands of the early 90's, basically alternative bands were that of the Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, etc.. etc.. and all those other bands in the early 90s. It was a form of music, that was an alternative variation of rock in those times. Alternative Rock is dead now.

But today, I wouldn't really classify any band as alternative music, it just doesn't fit, since it's no longer an alternative, everything is New Rock, regardless of how you put it.

But if you want to play the classification game, then yes, "NuMetal" as you put it, are bands like Slipknot, Korn, etc.. essientially that hard/heavy distorted guitar overtones with slight "rapping" as I'd call it. THen there's the lose term of "punk" which many people call bands like Sum41, Blind182, sure... but I call them Pop-Punk.. true punk has gone the way of the dinosaur, "true" punk bands are far and few between nowadays. Other than that, I just leave all the classifications as just New Rock, Pop Rock, Pop Punk, and then there's Pop.

But then again, it's just labelling something strictly for social distinction, other than that, its just music, like Billy Corgan said,

Ahh, words from Billy Corgan. I think i'll have to buy their Melon Collie cd, i lost their tape somewhere Thanks for the help though!

I know Nirvana would fall under that, but i've never though SP would. Not sure about PJ, never listened to em.

is Slipknot really in NuMetal? I haven't heard much of them, but they seem *closer* to death metal.

but i really don't pay attention anymore. what i like spans most genres so i stopped classifying groups like those.
