I bought this cheap crap 450 watt power supply ($30) and plug it into my machine. The computer turns on for a second and then nothing. End result, motherboard fried. I just bought a new $70 power supply and motherboard and everthing is working great! So buy a good power supply!!!!

What PSU did you buy?

Generally speaking, yes, a good PSU will = good performance and safety... Antec, Enermax, Zalman, and Seasonic make some good PSUs...

Sorry to hear that.

FYI, Antec and others make power supply testers for under $15 -- you plug the PSU motherboard power connector into it and it puts a 20 - 40 watt load on the PSU. I usually run it for about 30 seconds to see if the PSU is going to explode right out of the box.

(These testers heat up pretty fast, so you should never go away from the PC with the PSU tester running.)

Oh, and I also don't buy or use generic PSUs, it's just not worth the cost savings to risk all the other components in a system.

Actually, I bought a 400Watt noname for $30 over a year ago. Around 3 months ago my PC just shut down. Obviously it was the PSU dying, but nothing got fried or damaged (phew...).
But, for the new PC I'm planning, definitely gonna get a good solid one.

Horrible luck with Antec supplies, anyway, always go by WEIGHT, they can put any number on there as long as it hits that wattage for a tenth of a second then they'll call it PMPO (see: speakers :D) -- If a 300 Watt Enermax is heavier than a 500W "Jack's PSU Company" then go with the Enermax :D

I haven't seen these. Anybody have a link to a source for them?

I was going to buy an antec but the guy at Fry's said he thought the Aspire power supplies were just as good. He told me that he uses them and he hasn't had many returned. It saved me $60 and comes in cool colors too!:)
