This is an amazing and little known phenomenon. After I started networking, the chicks began to line up. It's gotten to the point now that I had to install a number dispenser by my front door.

Xan better watch it or I'm gonna start demanding fibre to my notebook next ;D

You might attract the women by networking, but it ain't a cheap habit to keep up ;)

[edit]Just this once, I'll quote from another conversation with Xan (no, it wasn't last night since this thread started ;p) (about women) <Xanathar> now you cant program then on a lower level, but the user interface is much better for the upper layer[/edit]

I don't know about the rest of you, once I started networking computers around the house, my wife was not too happy. :)

Man - since I put in a home LAN I can't even see a keyboard anymore for chicks!!!

It's amazing. Word gets out that you're into fast fraggin' (I can say that here can't I?) and it's just a stream to the terminals.

Cautious Note: If you are 30 and "relatively inexperienced" start with an 8 port hub and leave switches til later. Don't even dream of doing Linux, even if you get tempted at a party and "everybody was doing it"! Also, since you will now be popular and top of the guest list at social functions, beware of guys talking about "doing a bit of PHP". That stuff causes brain damage!! :Q

VERY IMPORTANT!!! PLEASE READ:

You really have to be good with working with female's hardware. They like it when you know how to work their software too. When the ladies find out that you are good with your equipment, they'll line up trust me. When you work with other hardware, make sure you have protection. Grounding yourself with a wrist cable should be good enough. Remember be gentle, I've had a lot of broken parts once. Last and most important tip, perform at your best when the need arises. Those are my tips when you work with the ladies' "networks".

You also have to make sure you have a good power supply. Consistency is also key. Weird fluctuations in power delivery can short circuit fuses and cause premature end to festivities....

Hmmm... Now that I think of it, about the time I set up my network I started getting more "interest", and much of the preamble to the girl I'm dating now was me upgrading her computer and setting up her internet connection (sort of "networking" in the broad sense).

I had better go for wireless LAN. Who knows what that will bring... Come summer that would be ideal: me surfing wirelessly by the BBQ on the patio with my shirt off and my oiled up skin glistening in the sun in full view of all the tenants of condo building beside me. I tell ya - they're gonna be knocking down my doors!

Yeah right. :p

Actually, met my girlfriend through networking and my profession. She's a network geek as well.

However, we're not allowed to talk shop at home (I strictly enforce). Good rule. We see enough of this stuff during the day.

Wirless is cool, but nothing draws 'em in like neatly trained CAT5 cables. Especially if it is color-coded and goes with the decor.

Can you get CAT5 in black lacquer? It would match Russ's end-table.

As far as switches vs. hubs, the ability of switches to carry simulataneous communication is a definite plus with the ladies. It shows you are sensitive and that what they say is important. Admittedly, the full duplex is wasted since most of the data will be coming from their end, but it does show you care, and that is actually more important than listening.

Networking connections on walls, especially bedroom walls visible from the bed, should always be finished in RJ-45 jacks. You'll get no points for wires coming out of ragged holes in the walls.

Yup, go for it, I let my girl poke around for a while looking for anthony hopkins, and got me a nice kiss. See she used to hang out with some low rater kid out on a farm, and she got him in trouble once thru the web. But she's comes to my place, and I have an entire machine she can mess with, and she can't get herself into that sort of trouble again, and I can get her music she wants, and movies. And well the poor guy doesn't stand a chance.

I set up my home network a couple months ago and the ladies haven't been off me since. I bring them up to my room and show off my pretty cat5 and all the sudden they jump me and throw me on the bed, and well... There's something about ethernet and the female gender, it makes them wanna share more than just files ;)

Yes, it will, but that's just the date. Getting a kiss might actually have to involve preparations such as combing your hair and brushing your teeth...:(

Not so true bobtist, I've gotten many a kiss on the thought of having a network, and we where only planning a token ring then. Now that the house is ether, things are moving much faster, (this time around)
I'm pretty serious when I say that the only thing that gets a girl hotter than a man who's networked, is a ride on a motorcycle. And I plan on being able to do that this summer.

So true. Within the first week of me getting my motorcycle, three women asked to go riding with me. I said no though. :Q Driving a bike in downtown Toronto is just an exercise in frustration - not fun at all.

Oh definitly EUG a motor cycle ride thru the country is what's best. Take a cruising bike down the highway, or street bike, go thru them country hilly curvy roads.

But back to computers, and networking. oh never mind this thread is too gone.

you might need to be old skool, like those 3.5" and 5.25" floppies dont impress a girl, need to have 8" floppie.
