What could they do to me? I have no money.

Let's say it's copyright infringement or trademark, something like that.

I'm not in any situation like this, just curious. Assets such as what? My car and my laptop is all I really have. Besides my clothes of course.

You're worthless; not worth suing..

But if you did get sued, it would probably be set up in some sort of annuity so you would owe $x amount per year for the next y years..

Or, if you couldn't pay anything now it could end up like.. $x + accumulated interest after 5 years for the next y + interest-accumulated years..

Don't get sued.

Couldn't you declare bankruptcy or something? Or does wage garnishment even follow you after that?

They would take all your assets.

this depends on state law. Texas and Florida have very strong property protection laws even in the face of creditors, but most states will allow confiscation of both real and personal property.

No I haven't had any letters or anything, just curious. If I was sued first thing I'd do is probably cry and then definitely post it in ATOT.

First rule learned in law school...never sue poor people.

although generally true, its not always the case. I mean take a look at the RIAA situation: you cant expect only wealthy people to be infringing so what do you do? Sue the poor to make a strong statement that nobody gets away with it.

Except for the RIAA and MPAA. I think this is what he is asking.

I would disagree...They've been suing people that could pay what they are asking and it more of a stunt than anything. Also its not like they are going for the maximum allowed by law...

I think they ask for under $10K in damages, which, even for poor people, might perhaps scrounge up from family friends, etc. Unless all of them are poor, and they won't get anything.

George: Hey, what about this? I'm in a car accident. The motorist is uninsured, you with me?

Jerry: Yeah.

George: My car's totaled. It's all his fault and now, he has absolutely no money. There is no way that he can pay me. So the judge decrees that he becomes my butler.

Jerry: Your butler?

George: Right. He cooks my food, he cleans my house, he does all my shopping for me. And there you go, that's your program.

Jerry: What about me?

George: Don't worry, we'll find something for you. (Knock of Jerry's door)

you shouldn't be on AT if you are caught by riaa/mpaa...
given your knowledge of the issue, your parents are probably even less knowledge and would pay them...
