ILM Loves Their Opterons

Apparently ILM has a lot of love for AMD, based on the cover story in the latest Wired. It mostly talks about Spielberg's new War of the Worlds movie, but buried in the article are a few nit of AMD love from the ILM effects guys:

Spielberg became a convert [to pre-viz] when he met pre-viz specialist Dan Gregoire at George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch in 2003. Gregoire was midway through Revenge of the Sith when he and his team got PCs equipped with AMD's new 64-bit Opteron microprocessor. Suddenly they were able to pre-viz a sequence of shots in an hour instead of several days. Lucas ended up looking over Gregoire's shoulder and making changes on the spot, almost as if he were directing actors on a set. So when Spielberg signed on to make War of the Worlds, one of his first calls went to Gregoire

I bet they are chomping at the bit for dual-core upgrades. The magazine has a pic of the SFX lead pimping his little red Acer Opteron-power laptop.

Now if AMD can just tie in to the movie's advertising blitz and get the message out to the masses that they have a world-class product out there that you can trust with your mission critical work.
