Article.

Here is my favorite quote from the article ...

"In today's world, parents face unprecedented challenges in monitoring and protecting their children from harmful influences. This bill will make their job easier," Blagojevich said, praising the House's 106-6 vote.

Yea ... it's just SSSOOO tought for parents now a days to monitor what their children are doing and what influences them.

wow, just wow at that quote.

yeah, it's good that parents don't have to be parents.

btw, Illinois was also the first state to ban the sale of ephedra. Another stupid law.

It's fair. The realism in some of todays games is remarkable. These aren't Street Fighter quality no more.

Some stores in Oregon already check ID when selling violent or "adult content" movies and video games, refusing to sell games rated Mature or movies with objectionable content to those under 18.

True VR should be adult only, huh?

I have absolutely no problem with that at all. A child should not be playing GTA, period.

It'll probably get ruled against on 1st Amendment issues. Similar laws have been already.

so you think a child should also not watch any R rated movies at all?

i was watching R movies since I was probably 8 years old. I remember seeing T2 in theatres w/my parents.

funny how I never went out and tried to make robots to take over the world or take a chaingun and take out an entire PD.

EDIT: do you also have problems with children playing DOA Volleyball ?

I'd leave it up to parents to decide, when applicable. The problem is, that has to be an active decision on the part of the parent. If it's illegal to get an R movie, as a kid, then only if I deliberately OK it will my kid see it (presuming they don't get it elsewhere). As it is now though "leaving it up to the parents" means "the parents dont' give a sh*t about anything, so the kids get it".

I won't have my kids playing GTA or watching massacre-movies when they're 9 years old, but if this law has some say on the other careless parents who shouldn't even have kids, then it's a good thing.

Stupid laws like this are so troblesome. Same reason my friends and I have to drive around to multiple stores just to find a place that would let us buy HL2. Parents really need to be parents.

Sure, it would be best for the parents to keep the kids from buying them, but what's wrong with simply enforcing that stores not sell them to minors? It's not like minors have a right to play violent video games.

kids need a ride to the mall to get the game, unless they are over 16. and usually the parents are the ones to drive them to the mall, which means the parent is okay with it in the first place.

i think its just ridiculous that a law like this is going to be passed. like its been said many many times before, if a kid doesnt know the difference between reality and video games, then the kid has other issues that need to be addressed.

i agree most 9 year olds should not be playing games like GTA, but there are many other games that are rated M for other reasons, such as the DOA:VB game. but i think it should be up to the parents what their kids do in this sense, not the government.

Ideally, so do I. I guess my misanthropy just dictates that most parents suck, so the gov't needs to have a say on it. I know that some 9 year olds are playing GTA. How? The parents are failing. If you're a good parent you don't have your 9 year old screwing hookers and bludgeoning cops. That's for grown-ups to do.

And children do have a poor grasp of reality. You see a lot of kids in a costume thinking their spider man. As time goes on their grasp with reality cements, but a kid even at the age of 10 can probably not have a proper one yet.

yea i agree with that, and it also has to do a lot with the children at hand.

my GF's little brother who is 10 borrowed my PS2 and GTA:SA for a very long time, and it has no affect on him whatsoever. he doesn't want to go and get in cars and run over people while doing a drive by. he is smart enough to know its just a game.

which in turn, all has to do with the overall parenting of the child.
