(PADUCAH, Ky., February 27th, 2004, 10 a.m.) -- An Illinois man carried a razor blade through metal detectors and slit his own throat after being sentenced to two years in prison for failing to pay child support.

Francis Borgia, 38, of Metropolis, was taken to Lourdes hospital, where he was treated and then taken to the McCracken County Regional Jail shortly before 3 p.m. CST.

Arrangements were being made to take him to the Kentucky Correctional Psychiatric Center in La Grange.

Borgia had been sentenced for not paying $7,007.12 in child support.

"Don't put me in jail; I'm going to kill myself," Borgia pleaded as he leaned forward and reached into his pocket.

McCracken County Administrator Steve Doolittle said security at the courthouse will be reviewed to see if another such incident can be avoided.

They showed the video on the news last night and you didn't see any blood but you see the guy take the razor and make a motion across his neck.

$7K in child support arrears is not that much...I guess he really doesn't want to pay it. I've seen cases where the debt is is mid-six figures

First, jail time for $7K in child support?

Second, he must not have been trying very hard if he was released right away & taken back to jail.

It could be because the guy is intentionally hiding his assets for the purpose of not paying child support

Or it could be he has lost assets he once had.

A friend of mine is having a hard time making ends meet with their baby because the child support he has to pay is based on an income about 2x what her guy makes now. They can't even afford to go back to court to change it. His ex lives with a very wealthy guy now, yet is relentless at forcing him to pay and also getting each and every extra she is entitled too. She will brag that she had the 'whatever' covered already, but was looking at this nice dress, handbag or whatever.

She was the one to leave him when he started not getting his bonuses. Shortly after the divorce the whole company went belly up.

He could've been sick in the head... rational people don't commit suicide over things like this.

Sorry for being blunt but your friend is an idiot.

It would cost nearly nothing, if anything, to go before the judge and show proof of current income. If he's that bad off, he would have done it.

Just for the record:

Failing to pay child support - 2 years.

I don't know all the details, I know one form was $200 something and that their new baby doesn't allow for a basis of modifying to a lower level of support for the previous one, so although he makes less they will also not account for the second baby now. I also know he may have to file in the county his ex lives as well, and also hire an attorney as she has one which has made some 'threats' should he bring an adjustment up.

It's a complicated issue and one I am not fully knowledgeble on.

Does the judge think he will earn more while in prison so he can support his kid(s)? There is something really wrong with that type of sentence. They should be forced to work "paid community service" or something and have that money go directly to the other parent.

He can always try and go thru Legal Aid (or whatever advocacy/assistance group is in his area).

And, I can't imagine some form being $200. Maybe the lawyer's fee to type it up and submit or something.

Hell, he could just start paying lower support and when they pull him into court in front of a judge for being in arrears he could then show proof of his lower income. My ex's lawyer used to make threats, too. I ignored every single one of them.

Or, get a temporary part-time job to make enough money to pay a lawyer.

He has options.

I agree with conjur, your friend has options if he really wants to get the whole thing resolved. Maybe someone from the county has a sympathetic ear and would be willing to work out a lower payment plan.
