Illegal Thread:9-15-06 Immigration raid cripples Georgia Chicken town

Good, the whole state should be raided, not just this one town.

Of course the resident Republicans said it wasn't true that the state is over run by Mexico when I was there.

9-15-2006 Immigration raid cripples Georgia Chicken town

STILLMORE, Ga. - Trailer parks lie abandoned. The poultry plant is scrambling to replace more than half its workforce. Business has dried up at stores where Mexican laborers once lined up to buy food, beer and cigarettes just weeks ago.

This Georgia community of about 1,000 people has become little more than a ghost town since Sept. 1, when federal agents began rounding up illegal immigrants.

The sweep has had the unintended effect of underscoring just how vital the illegal immigrants were to the local economy.

More than 120 illegal immigrants have been loaded onto buses bound for immigration courts in Atlanta, 189 miles away. Hundreds more fled Emanuel County. Residents say many scattered into the woods, camping out for days. They worry some are still hiding without food.

Last month, the federal government reported that Georgia had the fastest-growing illegal immigrant population in the country. The number more than doubled from an estimated 220,000 in 2000 to 470,000 last year. This year, state lawmakers passed some of the nation's toughest measures targeting illegal immigrants, and Republican Gov. Sonny Perdue last week vowed a statewide crackdown on document fraud.

The poultry plant has limped along with half its normal workforce. Crider increased its starting wages by $1 an hour to help recruit new workers.

Stacie Bell, 23, started work canning chicken at Crider a week ago. She said the pay, $7.75 an hour, led her to leave her $5.60-an-hour job as a Wal-Mart cashier in nearby Statesboro. Still, Bell said she felt bad about the raids.

"If they knew eventually that they were going to have to do that, they should have never let them come over here," she said.

====================================================
This is very much closing the barn door after the horse got out but at least a start.

These people are not going to become legal citizens. It could be possible to drive them back to Mexico like cattle if the whole Country did a concerted effort.

I'm shocked this is a Republican controlled City doing this.

This guy is sure to be re-elected unfortunately.

Kudos to him for knowing how to play Politics.

He may be in fact a Republican President down the road.

6-19-2006 Pa. city poised for immigration crackdown

HAZLETON, Pa. - With tensions rising and the police department and municipal budget stretched thin, Hazleton is about to embark on one of the toughest crackdowns on illegal immigrants anywhere in the United States.

Last week the mayor of this former coal town introduced, and the City Council tentatively approved, a measure that would revoke the business licenses of companies that employ illegal immigrants; impose $1,000 fines on landlords who rent to illegal immigrants; and make English the official language of the city.

"Illegal immigrants are destroying the city," said Mayor Lou Barletta, a Republican. "I don't want them here, period."

In San Bernardino, Calif., voters will decide whether to adopt a measure nearly identical to the one in Hazleton. An Idaho county filed a racketeering lawsuit against agricultural companies accused of hiring illegal immigrants.

Whites in Hazleton seem to overwhelmingly favor the proposed crackdown. Barletta's office has been flooded with hundreds of approving e-mails and phone calls ? from as far as California and Florida ? and he got a standing ovation when he walked into a Hazleton diner for lunch.

"It's about time," said Francis X. Tucci, 57, who was born and raised in Hazleton and owns a hair salon in the heart of the Hispanic business district. "We were a nice community. You find bad everywhere, I understand that, but we're talking about here and now."

Some Hispanics approve of the measure, saying they are fed up with crime and graffiti. "If I was mayor, I wouldn't let anyone in who had a criminal record," said Rafael Rovira, 69, a naturalized American citizen from the Dominican Republic.

The whole thing is disturbing but wow.....people are seriously going off the rail.....

My favorite quote from the article

Jose Lechuga, 42, came to the United States illegally in 1982, received amnesty in 1986 and now operates a grocery store and restaurant in Hazleton. He said the mayor is "confusing illegal people with criminals."

LOL

On a related note:

In the USA Today, the front page screams that major US cities are instructing their people to DO NOT ask about immigratino status.

This includes law enforcement, public workers and also medcial personal at hospitals.

How will such actions jive against the bills being proposed to penalize those that provide aid/comfort and have knowledge about illegals?

What's funny? That Lechuga is more correct than the mayor? These people aren't criminals.

What crime have they been legally convicted of again? Oh, and by your definition... you are a criminal, because I'm absolutely positive that you've comitted a crime before, no matter how hard it might be to get down from your ivory tower.

It's not just my definition, Illegal = criminal by it's very definition. You disagree with it, too bad for you. Another thing, you should come walk a mile in my shoes and see what a nise "ivory tower" I live in.

Last time I checked we had a presumption of innocence here. Cute how you dodged the idea that you are a criminal, criminal. You are. We all are. If we go by your black-and-white-no-room-for-logic definition.

And hey, you want me to walk a mile in your shoes? Deal. As long as you go walk a mile in the shoes of a Mexican immigrant. What I'm speaking of 30 days in Mexico, you then attempt to cross the border, and then you get paid 2.50 an hour to pick lettuce in Cali. Do that and I'll be impressed. But otherwise, why shouldn't I walk a mile in your shoes? As long as I don't trip over the Klan Robe it shouldn't be too bad.

Hey, look, the race card in an immigration thread! That didn't take long. :disgust:

Racism is a component of anti-immigration for some. To deny that is foolish. Now, as to whether or not it applies to 1EZduzit, and whether or not you have a sense of humor are debatable.

Fvck off. Have I broke the law? Yeah, I've ran stop signs, got caught speeding, even drank alcohol when I was underage. What a criminal.

How about you go to Mexico and try to stick them with your health care costs and see how it goes. Don't try and tell me they aren't criminals, because I know better.

And don't trip over you santimonius attitude about who has the moral high ground here. I didn't bust my ass for the last 35 years to have to compete with a fuvking illegal willing to give up his freedoms for illegal employement and free health care.

You are so far off on this issue that it is you who are pregidous againist legal, law abiding Americans and LEGAL immigrants trying to do the best they can for their families. I think you have some screws loose if you can't see that. Nobody is above the law in this country, ESPECIALY people here illegally in the first place, but many of them commit serious crimes and then just dissaper.

LOL, so now people who sneak into our country have the same rights as me? I don't think so.

If they are illegal they are guilty no?

I mean, being illegal proves guilt. That is like you saying a blind man isn't really blind until a doctor checks him out.

Could it be America is waking up?
Don't worry illegals, the bleeding hearts will have any city ordinance or law tied up in the non-elected judicial branch for years.

When we take the Country back from them they will not be able to stand it so hopefully they will just leave.

I mean, being illegal proves guilt. That is like you saying a blind man isn't really blind until a doctor checks him out.

I suggest you re-read the thread. They are not necessarily guilty of a crime OR deserve to be called a criminal by being in this country without a visa.

Fvck off. Have I broke the law? Yeah, I've ran stop signs, got caught speeding, even drank alcohol when I was underage. What a criminal.

By the definition you are using on Mexicans, then yeah you are a criminal.

How about you go to Mexico and try to stick them with your health care costs and see how it goes.

Because US Citizens all pay for their care. Are you high?

Don't try and tell me they aren't criminals, because I know better.

It is too bad your knowledge doesn't agree with the facts. However, your "opinion" is forced to label yourself a criminal if they are.

And don't trip over you santimonius attitude about who has the moral high ground here. I didn't bust my ass for the last 35 years to have to compete with a fuvking illegal willing to give up his freedoms for illegal employement and free health care.

So, if he busts his ass? And if his healthcare isn't free? People like to say that immigrants don't pay taxes. That's a laughable lie. Finally, it is entirely false that you are competing with them. Unless, of course, you work construction or clean. I'll give you those two things.

You are so far off on this issue that it is you who are pregidous againist legal, law abiding Americans and LEGAL immigrants trying to do the best they can for their families.

I believe the word is prejudice. Actually, I'm not prejudiced against legal, law abiding Americans. I am one. However, I do have to laugh at the ignorance regarding illegal immigration and the economic harm it supposedly creates. Perhaps if you had stayed in school you could spell prejudice, and after that you might not be competing based on the fruits of your back and hands. Just a thought. Hey, I bet you are against schooling too!

I think you have some screws loose if you can't see that. Nobody is above the law in this country, ESPECIALY people here illegally in the first place, but many of them commit serious crimes and then just dissaper.

You are the one that admits to breaking the law. I don't have any screws loose that I can't see the difference between a felony or violent crime and being here without a visa. There's a big difference. FInally, the idea of them "committing serious crimes" would be at no higher rate that American Citizens, so that point is entirely moot.

The way I see it, America is soon to face many economic problems that have been builing up for a few years now. And we'll need someone to blame for it, easiest way out will be to blame Illegal aliens!
Accuse them of everything in the book, even things that an Illegal immigrant could not be granted or be given no matter how hard he ./ she tried.

Like it isn't lawful american born or naturalized citizens who can live off of the government by simply asking.

Let's see, our own american born, english speaking people cannot find a job and we simply feed them for free.
An illegal alien who comes from very far away, speaks no english, has no legal status can find 2 and 3 jobs within 1 week of getting into the U.S.

Bunch of ignorant people!
