Illegal operations box not appearing

a while ago, I installed one of those crash prevention programs (because of the force shutdown feature) and it caused more trouble than it was worth... shutdown Now! works better. However, the program trapped crash exceptions, and did something. Now, (after removing the program) whenever something crashes, instead of the illegal operation box (with close, debug, etc) it just goes and debugs right away (starts visual c). I don't like that. How do I return the original functionality? (registry somewhere?)
