Sorry, its a CNN video.

To summarize, a bakery hired a number of illegal immigrants and allegedly shorted them on pay, paying them less than agreed or in food only. The video shows a number of illegal immigrants on the street outside the bakery protesting.

Here's my take. First, the illegals are criminals and ICE should swing by and pick them up. Second, the bakery owner needs to cough up the wages owed. Theft is still theft and an honest days work deserves an honest day's pay. Third, the bakery needs to be penalized for hiring illegal immigrants in the first place.

I'd like to emphasize the third point most strongly. The reason illegal immigrants come to the US is for work. If businesses that hire illegals are penalized so heavily that they could actually fold, this practice will decrease. It'd be far cheaper and less risky to just hire legal workers in the first place.

Some points:
They are here illegally -- yes. Therefore people exploit them for cheap labor..OR ELSE!
Because they're illegal, they should be smart and shut up about it. Now they'll likely get deported
Our immigration system is a POS which is exploited by both needy families and companies.
In the end the taxpayer and the illegals pay for this crappy system.

Also, in this jobless economy, AFAIK illegals have no hope of unemployment benefits.

I know many families who are in personal financial crysis because they don't have a cent of financial support from family or gov. Karma is a bitch

Actually, this sounds like the perfect solution to your illegal immigration problem: Encourage business owners to stiff illegal workers!

Just because the workers are here illegally does not mean the business owner can commit a crime (theft) without consequences. The illegals should be rounded up and deported, and the owner should face charges and get fined for hiring them as well as for shorting them.

No, if it's proven the Business owner knew they were illegals he should lose his business license be charged with theft and any charges having to do with helping the illegals evade detection and face the stiffest penalties including incarceration.

Sounds good to me. I completely agree with the bold part. I think companies that hire illegal labor are one of the major problems with illegal immigration.

I agree. Maddox made a post about this a few years ago. If you force companies to pay illegal immigrants equally, you take away the incentive to hire them.

People tend to act funny when they dont get paid on the agreed-to wages. It is also possible that the work they did was not very good, and the owner took the damages out of their wages. Maybe they were eating their wages.

It is kind of hard to feel bad for criminals. Both the owner and the employees were involved in illegal activity. I bet this guy did not plan on reporting their pay or paying their social security tax and their income taxes. If the govt would fine the owner $10,000 for every illegal hired that might actually mean something to him.

What an ungrateful prick the baker is, getting people to work for nothing and then not paying them.

Illegal alien hiring laws in the US were never really meant to be enforced, which is why they pretty much aren't.

But those stiffed workers can beat your ass and they will never be found. If it is a serious enough beating... they can hop the border back over into Mexico.

yup, we need to raise the fines on people who hire illegals. remember what happened to walmart? the owner should have to back pay the workers then be fined, then allow ICE to take care of them.

The baker should have to pay for work done and any penalties.
I know farmers here who hire illegals. It is strictly a cash payout for a days works. He doesn't even know the names of most of them. They show up for work in the morning, he takes them to the fields, they do the work, end of day he pays them cash for work done. It wasn't always that way here though. When I was a kid here about 20 years ago it was us kids that did that work. It was a great summer income doing things like cropping tobacco or picking corn. So what changed ? It isn't that the farmer here is paying low wages, he pays more for a days work than the you could ever make at fast food, average $50 - $60 cash for working 6am to noon. They quit at noon because it is usually too hot. The kids got lazy. The farmers here got tired of kids that said they would show up and never did, you can't run a farm like that. The other things the farmers like about illegals is it requires no paperwork. They show up, they get paid. He doesn't have to worry about keeping track of time, social security or anything else.

This.

Also, the baker was dumb. Why would you wanna mess with people who have little to lose? I'd be afraid of getting run down by a lowered 76 Impala or having my house trashed.
