Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson is asking for an internal review of the Obama administration's release of tens of thousands of immigrants in the country illegally who were convicted of crimes and facing deportation. He's telling lawmakers he wants a deeper understanding of the issue.
Federal data published this month showed that the Homeland Security Department released 36,007 convicted criminal immigrants last year who are facing deportation, including those accounting for 193 homicide and 426 sexual assault convictions. The immigrants nearly all still face deportation and are required to check in with immigration authorities while their deportation cases are pending.
Awfully naïve to think that they will check back in for deportation hearing.

Johnson said many of the releases were directed by an immigration judge or were prompted by other legal requirements. His written testimony did not provide additional details.
Serious questions need to be asked/answered as to why they are being freed.

Two sides to the answer, depending on what side of the illegal immigration fence you want to be on.
The data obtained by CIS does not include information on the conditions under which each immigrant was released. But Vaughan, the study's author, called into question the effectiveness of non-detention methods.
"I think the word supervision here implies that these individuals are actually being monitored closely when in fact some of the forms are supervision are very light supervisions such as the offenders simply having to make a phone call to an ICE office periodically," Vaughan said, adding that she knows of cases where the ankle bracelet monitors have been cut off.

Both Chen and Ben Johnson, the executive director of the American Immigration Council, also noted that most of the immigrants detained by ICE had previously served out whatever sentence the U.S. criminal system determined was appropriate for their crime. Johnson said that some people who are released are awaiting a decision while their immigration status appeals go through the court system.

The White House said this week it asked Johnson to delay completing his review of deportation policies until the end of the summer. It was a move aimed at salvaging hope for Congress to act on an immigration bill before November's midterm elections.
The WH wants the immigration bill or to suppress the blowback prior to elections?

Again politics trumps the enforcement of the law of the land. No matter the color of the side.

Delay does not equal suppress. Want to re-frame your issue?

Release does.

It's quite common for individuals who fight extradition to essentially be out on bail & has been for a long time.

In many respects, it's just a symptom of Repubs' refusal to properly fund the federal justice system or to even allow appointment of the number of judges necessary. Backlogs & delays are enormous, and paying privatized prisons to incarcerate people is very expensive in the meanwhile.

Maybe that's just Repubs' way of stimulating the economy, directing funding away from solving the problem (deporting people who deserve it) to the people who help them maintain it (privatized detention facilities).

Maybe they can create full employment by locking up more people, huh?

[EDIT: Ok, looking back at the original post I see what you mean.]

What in the world does that mean? Release of what does what?

A person that may have completed the sentence for which convicted of is allowed back into society even though that person is an illegal.
And the system is to expect that that person will show up for the deportation hearings to expel them from the country.
