Illegal immigrant served in Iraq - legal charges dropped!

Analog

Lifer
Identify theft charges have been dropped in Austin against an undocumented Mexican immigrant who bought a stolen
Social Security card for two-thousand dollars. The stolen card enabled Liliana Plata to join the Air Force and serve in the Iraq war.

Travis County prosecutors say they dropped the charges against the 25-year-old woman because she had already been discharged from the Air Force. Also, they say Plata didn't use the stolen information to defraud anyone.

Prosecutor Claire Dawson-Brown says Plata "took a shortcut she shouldn't have taken, but it was an intent that served a value for all of us" The prosecutor added that Plata "wanted to go and fight for her country, and she was a good soldier." Plata's attorney, Samuel Bassett, called the decision appropriate. Her immigration status isn't clear.http://news.yahoo.com/s/keye/20050707/l...sdroppedforundocumentedsoldierinaustin

I propose a new option for the immigration system: don't qualify to be an American, but still need to make a better life for you and your own? Join the military today! Spend 4~8 years in service of the country you want to become a citizen of, and we'll let you do it!

We get more soldiers, underprivelaged immigrants get a new chance at life. Sounds win-win to me!

EDIT: Yes, logistics of possible terrorist infiltration angles aside. The basic idea is still sound though.

If it was, the woman wouldn't have needed to purchase a fake SS card.

i thought historically that military service was a way to gain citizenship?

either way im satisfied at the results of the case, no all they have to do is let her stay

I believe you do get citizenship if you serve in the military, but apparantly that's just for legal immigrants.

Well there's that at least. But yes, I was referring to offering to approve your immigration in exchange for serving in the military. That I feel would be appropriate and win-win for all, espcially if we keep getting troop-happy in Middle Eastern countries.

Yes, but in order to serve in the military, you must already be a citizen. That's where the whole SSN number comes in.

Your proposal is somewhat similar to what the Romans did 2000 years ago. IIRC, it was join the army, serve for 25 years, then receive citizenship upon discharge. Unfortunately, I don't remember the year they instituted that reform.

Just like in the movie Starship Troopers 😛

To even BE a citizen you must serve your country for at least one tour of active duty.

Marius reforms Reform of the Roman military in the late 2nd century B.C.E. by Gaius Marius. In order to make up for the lack of troops to fight the Cimbric Wars Marius ignored the traditional minimum property requirement to be a Legionary and recruited citizens from any economic background on a permanent basis. These poorer soldiers hoped to be rewarded at the end of their terms with a grant of land from their commander and this has been credited with transferring the loyalty of the Roman military from the senate to the powerful individuals such as Sulla, Pompey and Julius Caesar and thus bringing on the collapse of the Republic.
