Just thought I'd share this with everyone.. I was working on my laptop.. and listening to the BBC on Npr.. and they had a segment on the Drug "khat" from africa.. and how America is attempting/going to make it illegal here..

Thought I'd open the floor to peoples thoughts on this..

Here's some info I found also:

Khat

Seems like America is getting extra conservative again :p

it's a crazy drug. it's what the Somalia militia men chewed before they attacked our troops (as noted in Black Hawk Down).

It will never catch on here, though. Vanity Fair had an interesting story about it. The drug loses it's potency in a matter of days after it's harvested, so they have to rush shipments in every day. It's always a mad rush to deliver it, high speed through the cities.

edit: Correction-- it was an Esquire article called "High In Hell".

So we grow it here.

I had a roommate in college - he was from Somalia. One weekend we all went home (was a suite - so there were 6 of us) and he apparently had some chick who flew in from Somalia stay with him for the weekend in the suite.. We opened the door sunday night and there was bed sheets all over the floors with this "khat" all over it...and apparently those 2 were up for days eating this stuff and doing "other" stuff. Just reminded me of that time when I saw this thread...

Everyone in Somalia chewed the sh*t and you could see the glaze in their eyes when they were hopped up on it. It tastes nasty as hell.

I seem to remember a while back when I was younger that there was a thing going on about a drug called cat. It was an amphetamine, but I think it stands for "methcathinone".

Well, looking at methcathinone at Wikipedia it says it's confused with khat from Africa sometimes. Seeing "khat" and amphetamine just reminded me of it, I guess.

weird apparently the plant is legal in the US, but the leaves by themselves aren't. guess they just don't want trade in the stuff. fine by me as long as i can grow, why buy it? if only they had the same stance on other plants :(

Cat and khat are two wholly different beasts.
