Do you believe that one can aspire greater than what one has grown up as? Or do you believe you belong where you grew up as? I'm asking, because my wife and I belong to different social groups. And my wife and I aren't having problems in the least--this is more for us to understand each other (read: me get a clue about this shit)......

So, what do you think. Can a person grow up poor and grow up beyond their standard life of living? And can a poor person grow up and be poor?

Definitely.

Of course you can live a more lavish lifestyle. You might feel a bit socially awkward in such situations, but you will adjust. Isn't that the goal of most parents? Give their children a better life than they had?

Of course. One can fall social classes too. However, rising or falling *many* classes is not common.

Any intelligent driven person can be whatever they desire(assuming they are given appropriate freedom with their lives).

Dad does manual labor for anyone that takes him, mom can't get a job because of her criminal record. I make 45k, live downtown in a condo and spend a good amount of time on ATOT.

Hell yeah.

Harder now than ever to get somewhere high unless you know the right people and play by "the rules".. but still absolutely doable.

I grew up poor. The house I grew up in is worth $25,000 TODAY... so what does that tell you. I'm not rich but I am much better off than my parents were. I am relatively intelligent but no genius, and my liberal arts degree (which took my 8 years) didn't pull much weight. All I did was read about successful people and applied many of the techniques. Except I never tried to be a social climber. That wasn't going to work for me as I am not good at being a sycophant and I won't compromise my principles to get ahead. It meant cutting ties with some friends over the years, but that was OK.

I just work hard, always tell the truth and do what I say I will do. It's worked for me. Steady promotions throughout my career.

According the all the fortune cookies I've eaten over the years great things are going to happen...they just haven't yet.

As for the answer: Growing up in a lower-income home can actually work as incentive to break into the middle-class or upper middle-class. The key elements here though are getting an education and finding a solid job, sometimes just being lucky, or being a good entrepreneur.

Those who have the will can find a way.(that could also be in a more literal sense if you have a wealthy relative die) So, it's very possible. As for changing WHO you are. That's not so easy. If you lose your roots, so to speak, your well-being is going to be less stable and you'll be more likely to have a mental backlash. This could cause you to be less happy and money wouldn't really help enrich your life. Good fortune, wealth, and happiness are much better when you have all three.
