Long, boring story short: I flashed my Nec ND-3500 drive with a hacked firmware and accidentally left a DVD in the drive while updating the firmware, and now the drive looks to be hosed?
Here?s the long, boring version for anyone who feels like taking pity on me and giving some advice.
I attached my Nec ND-3500 drive via an external USB 2.0/Firewire enclosure. Windows XP Pro SP2 recognized both the enclosure and the drive flawlessly. I fired up DVD Decrypter and began ripping own of my own DVDs in order to make a back-up copy. I was immediately irritated by the 2X ripping and decided to flash the drive with a hacked firmware.
I then downloaded some firmware from the Dangerous Brothers, which can be found
As I installed it (and keep in mind I forgot a DVD in the drive) I noticed it took nearly 4 minutes to install?that?s when I started to get nervous.
It finally finished and told me to reboot and I did so. When I rebooted Windows found new hardware balloon appeared in the system try. saying ?found CD-ROM drive? I waited patiently for it to continue on and say ?found DVD+RW/-R drive? ?found NEC ND-3500? etc, but the computer had locked up?even though the LED on the front was blinking constantly.
I rebooted and installed it via my secondary IDE controller?this had the helpful effect of not allowing Windows to boot?it basically hung at the screen where it says ?Boot from CD-ROM?
So I removed the drive, booted into Windows and re-attached it. The LED continued to flash like the world was coming to an end, and after a few minutes it seemed to grind my system to a halt. Luckily the door to the drive will not open. I have rebooted numerous times, and the problem persists.
Any suggestions ?
I was thinking potentially that I maybe could try and flash the drive in DOS mode?thereby denying Windows and hopefully the drive itself a chance to realize how screwed up it is. But that is just a thought, and if you have read this far I am sure it is crystal clear that I am not as clever as I thought I was 24 hours ago.
BTW, I know it is probably a dead drive at this point, but I thought it was worth asking before I ordered a new one.
AND, I know flashing firmware is a dicey process and all the steps must be carefully and precisely followed. I blame no one but myself for the whole fiasco.
