I would like to overclock my CPU. I have the setup listed in my sig and have read a TON about OC'ing. However I am concerned about making the WRONG changes in my BIOS settings and frying my system.
I Know a lot of you would say "The best way to find out is to try it", but i am not made of money and my wife will KILL me if I spend any more on this system right now)

My goal is to make my system run @1.5mhz or so SAFETLY. I believe my cooling to be sufficient for this load. Also I am using a 350watt ANTEC power supply, so that should be enough juice.

My CPU is a Athlon T-Bird 1.33mhz/ 266fsb AHJYA stepping. I have done NO mod's to the actual chip.
I have a MASSIVE cooling unit on my CPU as well, so no worries there.

I am using (3) 256MB modules of RAM. I am only 50/50 on what cas speeds thay are running at. i know for CERTAIN that 1 stick is cas2, the others I am not sure about. (How do I find out?)

Here's what i need to know EXACTLY.

1. What BIOS changes need to be made

2. Do I need to make any changes on the board itself? It has 1 Jumper that allows to change from 100mhz to 133mhz (spec's here: http://www.x-faqtor.com/KK266.htm). Right now the jumper is enabling 133mhz support.

3. Is my chip "factory unlocked" or do i need to make changes to the physical chip itself?

4. Will there need to be any changes to the CMOS? If so what?

Whatever else I am missing, please fill in the blanks.

The person who manages to get my system to run at the targetted speed gets $5 via paypal.

thanks all.

[*]Reboot PC and go into the BIOS
[*]look under iwill smart setting
[*]change the FSB to 150
[*]change cpu core voltage to 1.85v

See if she will boot :)

Result= Blue screen of Death...damn!

It would not boot to windows at all. Also it appears that it was only counting up 1 stick of my ram for some reason. set it back to 133 / 1.75 and she fired right up and counted all 3 stick of Ram.

Good try though...any other suggestions?

Try changing the clock to 11.5 and leave cpu voltage @ 1.85, and leave FSB @ 133

Do what John said.

Well. Overclocking from 1.33mhz to 1.5mhz I'm not so sure.

What about if you had a 1.33ghz chip and went to 1.5ghz hmmm.

Maybe it's your memory holding you back. Try taking them all out and trying only the crucial. See if it will boot with that. See if you can raise the i/o voltage or whatever it is the ram voltage, and see if that will make it boot. Good luck. Some chips just dont want to overclock.

I imagine that 1.5mhz is very easy to obtain, but why not shoot for 1.5Ghz ;)

You're kinda stuck on that 1.33mhz deal aren't ya. A 1.33Ghz chip will hit 1.5Ghz easy though. I have a 1.4 on that same motherboard & it hits 1.7 pretty easy.

<< I am using (3) 256MB modules of RAM. I am only 50/50 on what cas speeds thay are running at. i know for CERTAIN that 1 stick is cas2, the others I am not sure about. (How do I find out?) >>

Some brands have it written on a sticker attached to the ram (Crucial for instance). If it's name brand, I would plan on it hitting cas2 @ 133, but you may have to drop it to cas3 to go past that

<< 1. What BIOS changes need to be made >>

Depends, you want to OC via the FSB or the multiplier? If you want to do FSB, you can just type in a new FSB, as well as maybe make a few memory timing changes later (I will elaborate on this if this is the route you choose). If you want to do a multiplier change, just change the multiplier[/b]

I HIGHLY doubt it's factory unlocked, and if it isn't it's a rather simple process to unlock it on the Thunderbird CPU's(more elaboration later if you choose this route)

By this I think you are refering to your BIOS. In which case the 1.85v change is about the only one I can think of)

Your CPU should be factory unlocked. Just keep bumping up the FSB and testing it out on sandra with the burn in wizard. Once you get to a point where you can't go any higher without a BSOD bump the CPU voltage up a little. Keep doing this untill you get to a point where it wont go any higher even with the voltage increase. Then, try to bump up your clock multiplyer. It is really hard to hurt your CPU setting it too high. It either wont boot or you will get errors in the OS. Just bump it back down and it'll run fine again.

I didn't read EVERYTHING that was posted, but if you can, up the DDR vcore and the AGP vcore.

<< change the FSB to 150 >>

You know, something went freakishly wrong with my ASUS A7V133 this past Saturday morning. I already had a 200MHz OC of my processor (10.5X133) but I decided to back the multiplier down and do a FSB OC...I jumped right to 150 because I was able to hit 143 the last time I OCed anything. Anyway, long story short...if you look at my rig, you'll see that I know longer have that mobo.

Oh well.

I AM POSTING MY FOLLOW UP'S IN CAPS TO MAKE IT EASIER TO DISTINGUISH...

-GOOD POINT, I Feel pretty dumb now...;)

-THAT SOUNDS GOOD

-
OK, IF I USE IT AT CAS3 WILL IT IMPEDE MY PERFORMANCE GAINS (HITTING 1.5GHZ). WHERE WOULD I MAKE THESE MEMORY ADJUSTMENTS? GOD I SHOULD JUST NOT BE SO PARANOID ABOUT MAKING BIOS CHANGES, HUH.

<< 1. What BIOS changes need to be made >>

-I THINK I WOULD LIKE TO DO THIS VIA MULTIPLIER, AS THAT SEEMS THE SAFEST ROUTE. CAN WE TRY THAT WAY 1ST? OR WOULD YOU SUGGEST THE OTHER WAY AROUND AND GO WITH FSB OC'ING?

<< 2. Do I need to make any changes on the board itself? It has 1 Jumper that allows to change from 100mhz to 133mhz (spec's here: http://www.x-faqtor.com/KK266.htm). Right now the jumper is enabling 133mhz support. >>

-YES, IT'S ALREADY SET AT 133MHZ

-THAT'S OK, I WOULD PREFER NOT TO DO ANY CHIP MODS RIGHT YET IF I CAN JUST AS EASILY OC VIA MULTIPLIER OR FSB INSTAED.

-ACTUALLY, I WAS REFERING TO MY CMOS, BUT I GUESS THERE WILL BE NO CHANGES THERE. ONLY TO THE BIOS.

LASTLY, WHAT'S YOUR PAYPAL ADDY IF THIS ALL WORKS OUT?

THANKS FOR THE HELP.

PANICK ATTACK...I just tried this and my whole system freaked out. It would not read my HDD to start the OS and then when I tried to get back into the BIOS to change it back, it wouldn't let me in. Just kept freezing up on the POST screen. I finally pulled my HDD and powered up. On the second time I was able to get back into BIOS and make the change back to "auto". Plugged in my HDD and booted back up.

It did read 1533GHZ as it was booting though...but then it just froze!

WHEW! that was close!

My heart just isn't cut out for OC'ing I guess. All I could picture was a DEAD MoBo or HDD. Either one would have sucked!

no, corrputed data but not screwing up the hard drive physically.

i wouldn't take the risk if i were you, seems like you're not very familiar with overclocking...

here's what you REALLY need

a swiftech watercooling system
&
some PC2700 DDR ram

your motherboard looks g00d to me, maybe it's the memory or NIC ( a lot of NICs dont like overclocked systems). An unlocked CPU with a watercooling system can take you to a very high speed.

well, since CPUs are so cheap now why dont you get a faster one :)

All replies have been helpful. I have learned a great deal (and felt the icy grip of panic more than once)Although I have not succeeded in OC'ing this baby yet I think that Scootin159 deserves the $5 for the help and time he took to direct my efforts. Scootin, PM me your paypal and I'll send you the $5.

I have decided to grab a 1.4GHZ T-Bird (to start out a little higher on the food chain) and some better RAM (which I trhink is my achilies heel right now) and try again. I will succeed in my efforts!!!

Thanks all.

LOL, I'd like to see you hit 1.5mhz. I'd say 1.5ghz is much easier to obtain than 1.5mhz.
