I'll never buy Canon Printers again!

I bought a bjc-6000 a couple of years ago, what a big mistake i made. Firstly whenever i hadn't used it for more than 3 days the print head would dry up and wouldn't print anything, it would take about 5 deep cleans before anything would come out! Secondly, when printing a combination of black and colour images, it'd use the CMY cartridge to print the black image instead of using the black cartridge. Maybe this is a ploy to squeeze more dollars from the user, i don't know.
Anyways i got real mad when it wouldn't print and after cleaning it sooo many times, in a fury i unplugged the printer, held it over my head and while shouting "Fvck you Canon" i threw it onto the ground. It broke apart easily, anyways inside there were 3 layers of sponges all soaked in ink (they looked like the ones you use to wash the dishes). I presume this to be the cleaning mechanism, whenever activating the deep head cleaning the head would slide over these sponges a couple of times. Also the damn printer wastes ink even when its not turned on! its head parks onto the sponge which drains the ink onto it.
Anyway Canon, you've made it to my "Don't buy from" list

It's not particularly valid to base your decision on hardware that is several years old. The BJC-6000 printer (and indeed the entire "BJC" line) has been obsoleted and replaced by the "S" Series printers for a long time now. They are even into the 3rd generation now, and print speeds and qualities for the latest Canon printers are lightyears ahead of what the best BJC could produce.

I don't deny that the older Canon models were pretty crap (and known for terrible colour quality), but as I said above, the S series is just great.

The Canon S800 (I wish I would have waited for the borderless model, S900?) is the best printer I've ever owned, and I've owned Epson, Lexmark, and HP.

The output on glossy paper is phenominal, and it's good for regular text as well.

I'm using a Canon S9000 to print photos; you will be hard pressed to find ANY printer in it's league in terms of performance and photo quality (photos are simply STUNNING!). I can print out 8.5 x 11 high resolution prints in 60 seconds flat, 4 x 6 prints in 40 seconds flat...no other vendor can match this performance that I am aware of. Now to achieve all of this I stick to Canon inks and papers so I'm not sure what the cost factor in all of this is but I could give a @hit!

For general purpose printing on plain paper, it's every bit as good. VERY quiet and fast.

I keep it turned off and only use it to print pics every so often and have not had one single issue after printing several hundred photos over the past 3 months or so.

Paid $309.00 for this baby courtesy of Dell and, next to my 10 year old HP Laserjet 4P, the BEST printer that I have ever bought...Canon ROCKS!!!

If you don't want to buy Canon printers then that is your loss. The S series printer are freakin' AWESOME! These are the only printers I recommend now.

I'll echo what these guys have said, the Canon S series printers are really Canon's coming out party. Canon really has its act together w/ the entire S series line. I have the S750 and it fits my needs to a T - occasional photo printing and good plain paper printing, both color and b&w text.

All inkjet printers that I know of park the print heads onto a sponge or felt.

The "S" series are really good printers, the only gripe I have with them is that the black ink smudges easily on plain paper - maybe because they have more carbon in it?? I dunno. This was easily fixed but going with a generic cartridge though. My S750 is a excellent printer, as was the BJC 6200 which is still working perfectly.

Cheers
