I knew you could get lasers in the (IIRC) low hundreds of milliwatts from DVD burners. Maybe less, even. So I was curious enough to look around see what a 2w laser costs.

...holy shit. That's an expensive duck hunt. Is it really 2w, or is he just advertising the total draw of the gun?

Those are .5-2w. Try to imagine a 15kw laser like I used at work.
No wonder the military is testing them as weapons.

Still, something like a rail-gun has even more potential I think. At least until we can get said 15kw laser in a hand held unit with a days worth of power.

Hopefully they do something to keep that power cell from abruptly releasing all its energy at once, like a lithium-ion or li-po battery gone bad.

Accidentally dropped your personal defense kilowatt pulse-laser, damaging the power cell in the process? Oops, you just leveled half a square mile.

Q: What is used in these crazy lasers you speak of, and what type of laser is being used in the links at the top of the thread?

CD/DVD drives use laser diodes, AFAIK...I'm guessing they're not capable of the output seen in these 'lasergun' projects, right?
