IL drivers, Davenport to Chicago tomorrow

It looks like the distance is about equal for both routes. I've done both many years ago and the timing was about the same, but I-80 was completely ripped up with construction. Is the construction over, or is I-88 still worth the massive amount of toll money and all the delays at the toll booths?

I want to go to Chicago (Lincoln Park) tomorrow as quickly as possible. On the way back home, I don't really care about speed. Which route would you take, 80 or 88? Or is there some other good route?

davenport! It's been so many moons since I lived in iowa. No maid rites in florida, and only ONE taco john's...and it's a hour away from me.

But no, I don't know. 😀

You're going to be driving around Chicago's highways on the Friday before Labor Day weekend.

hahaha

Anyway stay off 88 as it has an assload of construction and the tolling is all f'ed up. 80 won't likely be all that great either though at least you will save the monrey

Edit: oh you're coming into the city. 88 to 290 then, you don't have a lot of choice

What part of chicago are you trying to get to? I'd try and look up construction maps through the illinois department of transportation. Parts of 80 are still torn up southwest of the city, and there may be construction further west of that out to the Iowa boarder. So take a look at a map and see where the two highways will dump you, and see if you can route around the construction.

I hoped going into Chicago will be better than going out. And I'll be going to Lincoln Park (just north of downtown) in late afternoon when everyone is leaving downtown. So traffic will be busy, but at least I'll be going against the bulk of the traffic.

The gettingaroundillinois website looks like I-88 has way more construction, but it looks like minor construction. How is the I-80 to I-55 route? Or I-80 to Hwy 34?

Problem is the toll plazas on 88 are converting to open road tolling and creating massive bottlenecks.

The 80/55 interchange is also under construction. The inbound lanes shouldn't be nearly as bad as the outbounds but a wreck (I saw 4 last year on the same day down the Stevenson) fvcks up traffic in both directions.

The Dan Ryan 90/94 will be a disaster for the next two days so you'll have to go through the city.

Ok the whole "Avoid Dan Ryan" websites make me want to avoid that area. I-80 the whole way is then out. I-88 sounds like a miserable drive.

Is there anything wrong with I-80 on the west of IL, Hwy 34 diagonally up to Chicago, then I-88 just past naperville?? That'll route will avoid the bulk of the construction that I can see online.

On second thought, do this:

Take I-80 from Davenport to the I-55 interchange. Take I-55 North. Tune your radio to AM780 and listen to the traffic reports. If I-55 (Stevenson) gets too messed up take I-355 North to 88 to 290 to get into the city or 294 North to 290 to the city.

Best of luck, you'll need it.

P.S. staying off the Drive would most likely be a good idea too

Do not go onto the state routes in the burbs on Friday especially anything through Naperville. Stay off Rt. 59 at all costs.
