IL-2 Sturmovik demo is slow

I'm thinking of getting a flight simulator game and a joystick. I have a XP1700+ cpu and Geforce TI4200 videocard. I played the IL-2 Sturmovik demo and it is so damn slow even at 640x480. In my opinion this game isn't even playable given it's a flying game where precision is critical. Choppy framerates ruins it.

For those of you who have the retail game, is it also that slow?

Also, I was thinking of either getting a joystick or a dual analog game pad. I was wondering if I could use the game pad's dual stick as a joystick? I think a dual analog game pad is a better investment for me since I don't even have any flying games just yet.

IL2 is a monster system hog. It has over 2 million lines of code and isn't for a faint system. That being said your system should handle it ok. Ok being 20-50 FPS depending on the ground objects.

Open the console by pressing shift+tab. type "fps SHOW START" and you'll get a FPS meter. Go here for information on using the best graphic settings.

You really need a full sized joystick for this game. Anything less and you'll simply get frustrated with it. I'd suggest you get a Cyborg 3D Gold joystick. The "Gold" version is there classic style with better components, I don't have it but I've heard many things about it being the best cheap stick out there.

Good luck.

I'm thinking of getting the Microsoft Sidewinder ForceFeedback 2(red edition). A lot of online stores have it for $80 and has a $20 mail-in rebate. That's a good deal I say. If only I can get local stores to PM.

I finally figured out the slow down: it was the directx audio. I simply switched to sensaura and I got super framerates.

Good... If you consider purchasing the game make sure you buy IL2: Forgotten Battles. It's newly released and includes all the content of the original IL2 game, plus many more planes and such.
