Painting the cabinets and new cabinet doors/hardware would cost the same or less than completely new cabinets. And, you can put the saving toward better appliances and tiles.Originally posted by: sohcrates
Thanks everyone.
The current cabinets are decent, but are from 1983 and are definitely showing their age. and unfortunately, they were *cheap* to begin with. it's an old townhouse that was originally built w/out any sort of upgrades. existing cabinets aren't mdf, but are some type of plywood.
I am trying to do the whole kitchen myself under a strict budget. Initial plans are 2-3K for cabinets, 1500-2K for counters, new tile floor, new fridge and new dishwasher. we have a new stove and micro already.
so i'm thinking like 6-7K could do it. Not really moving anything around or doing any structure or plumbing or even any electric changes.
All i have to compare that to is friends and family who have spent anywhere from 35K to 55K to renovate their kitchens. That just seems absurd to me i guess
35K-55K is about right for a remodel kitchen.
2-3K seems a bit low for cabinets unless the plan isn't call for many cabinets.
Corner cabinets can cost an extra few hundred bux because lazy susan would really help utilizes the dead corner spaces. Also, pullout cabinet racks & drawers would add more to the total cost.
New kitchen sink would cost at least $100, and an additional $200 or more for a faucet (realistic cost would be around $500 or more for the sink/faucet combo).
It might be a wise idea to plan for under cabinet lighting if you are not redoing the kitchen light source to give you more work lights, or install track work lighting.
I would plan for water filtration system while the floor & wall are expose because it would be easy to intall the water line now than later. Under cabinet RO system can be locate in the garage/basement/craw space and have a long water line run to the tap...it would save the space under the kitchen sink for garburator & garbage can.
Thin set/grout/sealer cost about $1.00 sqf on top of the cost of your tiles & tools.
