Iiyama 454 19" Monitor - something wrong?

I've just recently bought the Iiyama 454 after strong recommendations from virtually everyone who's got one. However, i've noticed that on 1600x1200, my display looks a tad stretched on the vertical. It's not overly obvious or annoying, but it's defintely not quite right. 1280x1024 looks fine. The desktop icons & text look a bit strecthed though on 1600x1200, and it's also noticeable in games to a degree.

I'm not sure if this is a fault in the monitor, perfectly normal or something else wrong with my video setup. I installed the correct Iiyama driver just to be sure, and my video drivers are up to date. I've also played endlessly with the screen sizing features on the monitor itself.

I'm using a GF3 Ti200, which perhaps is the cause of the problems. I will be getting a new graphics card soon anyway, so that may clear up the problem, but i wanted to ask if this is something anyone else has experienced, and/or knows the cause of. It is starting to annoy me somewhat.

I run at 1600x1200 on my laptop, so i know what it SHOULD look like, and the Iiyama definitely isn't quite right.😕

Well the only thing I can think of is that you are accustomed to different aspect ratios. 1280x1024 is a different ratio that the more standard 1600x1200/1280x960/1152x864/1024x768/800x600/640x480--do the math. To me, 1280x1024 looks stretched horizontally as it is a more nonstandard resolution. I remember when I bought my monitor, running at 1280x1024, I could not stand the distortion. I eventually ended up modifying the registry to allow 1280x960. You have obviously become used to 1280x1024. You're monitor is not to blame. I own an iiyama i90a and have noticed no distortion problems.

Well, as i say I use 1600x1200 on my laptop, and it doesn't look the same on the Iiyama, and I assume it should do. Why would it not? I see your point about getting used to a resolution, but seeing as before i got the Iiyama, I ran at 1280x1024 on that system and 1600x1200 on my laptop, that isn't likely.

But looking at 1280x1024 on my laptop, it does look stretched horizontally. Maybe it's just different on different graphics card/monitor setups.

I can only assume for now that it's my graphics card playing up. It's flickering a bit (as it did on my old monitor), so maybe that's a sign of a problem.

I would guess that cbuchach is right. 1280x1024 is not a standard resolution. 1600x1200 has a ratio of 4:3, as does 1280x960, 1024x768, 800x600 and the other resolutions that he mentioned. 1280x1024 has a ratio of 5:4. It should be this resolution that looks strange, but it seems that you have gotten used to it. 🙂 As for your laptop... who knows, but I would not think that it's screen is close to the accuracy of your new monitor.
