just like the topic states, is there a game similar to Civilization 3, except in real time (like Starcraft) rather than turn based. I really like Civ3, I just don't like the fact that it is turn based. Makes it much more tedious to play.

There is a game coming out soon that looks like it might be a lot of fun, and like a Real Time Civ 3.... I think it is called "Rise of Nations."

Walmart has it now, at least the one in Bedford, Indiana does.

I was looking at it when I bought "Hearts of Iron".

Ya Rise of Nations is probably what you are looking for. It's not turn based and there are "ages" but the ages don't go into the future, they only go to around our current era. It's also much more combat oriented then Civilization 3. The whole purpose of the game is to basically pummel the other civilizations into dust :) It's pretty fun, but the games last an average of 1-2 hrs.

I'm looking for something more on strategy and diplomacy (like in Civ3) rather than just fighting the other armies (like in Starcraft). Also I don't think Rise of Nations will run on my machine, its too ancient.

I liked Age of Empires, haven't played that in years. But its not like Civ3 in terms of diplomacy and stuff....hmm...I'll have to find my copy and re-install it though. How is the Age of Kings?

Well, you might like "Hearts of Iron". It's 1936-1947 only though. There is combat, of course, but there is also diplomacy, trading, and huge amounts of research.

It's not turnbased (an hour passes in about 10 seconds), and you can increase or decrease the speed.

Hearts of Iron rocks but be aware that it is quite possibly the most bug-ridden game every made. Even after a series of patches many players are still experiencing serious problems. Consider yourself warned. :p

another vote for rise of nations. conquer the world mode is straight out of risk. turn based. but the actually fighting is RTS. very cool. :D

Ah ic, the diplomacy aspect in Rise of Nations is there and you can actually increase it's importance by tweaking the quick battle rules. For example you can set it so that no one is allowed to attack each other, or they can't attack each other for a certain amount of time. You can also set different victory conditions such as tech, wonder, and resource. But honestly I have to say that the game is geared much more towards the combat oriented player, so this game probably is not for you. But I still recommend you download the trial and check it out or maybe go to a friend's place who has it and give it a try because you might like destroying other civilizations :)

Rise of Nations is good. For me, it's a big learning curve. gotta work on it more.

There isn't much diplomacy in Age of Kings, but there is an increased emphasis on economic development, rather than just military, in AOK. But it's a few years old already.
