IIS Authentication problem

A website I run has stopped working. It now requires all users to enter a username/password to access the site. I checked the IIS permissions, anonymous access is granted, the AppPool is set to Network Service user, which has access to the directories. Any ideas why this would start happening out of nowhere?

Just a thought, but have any updates or policies been applied that might have impacted your users' User Authntication settings within IE (assuming internal users running IE)? Other than that, has your IUSR account had NTFS permissions to the directories revoked?

Definetly verify the NTFS permissions.

Right click the site and select properties.

Click the Directory Security or File Security tab (don't remember which off the top of my head, and then, in the Authentication and access control section, click Edit.
Make sure anonymous access is set there and check to see if the Windows Integrated Authentication check box is checked, if so, uncheck it.

You don't need to uncheck Windows Integrated if Anonymous is enabled. Since the browser does not know the authentication mechanism used by IIS, it first makes a query to the web server. If it receives a 403.1, it will try Windows Integrated, etc.

Check to make suer that machinename\users have at least read on the website files.

Well since you are using anonymous you really only need the IIS user account to have access to the files in that wwwroot directory but making sure the local user group has access won't hurt.

Maybe your IIS_USR account lost sync. Search google for iwamsync.vbs, should fix your issue if it is not permissions related.

IUSR_MachineName falls user MachineName\Users. No need to put IUSR itself on a directory unless you only want IUSR having access to the directory/files.

Above is true under 2003, but not 2000.
