IHS not perfectly flat?

So I've heard some reports of C2D heatspreaders being concave or convex, which really ruins temps when paired with the uneven surface of an Ultra-120X. I was surprised to discover that my AMD X2's IHS also wasn't completely flat, as shown by the zinc coating still remaining on my CPU after sanding with 280/400/600/800 and three buffing compounds beyond 800.

The sheet of 280 that I got from PCViper.com is pretty much done for, so I plan to get some more sandpaper from Autozone and re-lap the IHS to get a better finish.

Should I get anything beyond 1000 grit? From what I hear, it's not beneficial to have a perfect mirror finish, but I still see a lot of small scratches in my IHS after finishing with 800 grit.

From what I've heard, anything above 1000 is pretty much the "finishing touches". I personally sanded down to 1200, then ran it around on 4000 for a few minutes to shine the baby up. With 1200, I could still see the individual grain lines, but 4000 really shined it up.
