Fallout 3 was awesome. I borrowed it from a friend while I was unemployed and put over 80 hours in. Got all the achievements on the original game and all the expansion packs.

i played FF 1, 2, 7, 8, 9 , 10, 10-2, 12, 13, 13-2. never got a chance to play 6. i guess it is time to buy it off of the PSN. will let you know what i think in a few weeks.

It's funny, I've had debates, often times with people on this forum, about great classic games and how they stack up to games of today. And one of the most common counterarguments I hear is that I have my "nostalgia goggles on", and am biased towards old games because of my memories from my childhood, etc.

Anyway, I never played FF3 as a kid. I played through FF2 (4) as 7 year old when it was brand new, and loved it, but for whatever reason, I never tried 3 (6).

So I played it for the first time maybe 7 or 8 years ago....and LOVED it. The story, characters, music, etc...all still exceptionally well-done. Better than the majority of whats out there now. No "nostalgia" about it, since I didn't have any childhood memories of it. But what a great game.

I grew up playnig all of the jrpgs and am 90% sure that when I think back on those games my appreciation is in a large part due to "nostalgia goggles". The only reason I can go back and play Chrono Trigger is because it was so much less random encounter overload relative to the other games. I tried to go back and play some of the FF games and just don't have the desire to deal with the random encounter mechanic.

well i bought FF 6 and man does it feel outdated. Its a PS1 game running on a PS3. i dont think i can put up with random encounters anymore. the music is sweet though. i just started, maybe i should play a bit more.

has anyone ever played Phantasy Star III? I went through all 3 generations and beat the game when it came out... must've had 10,000 random encounters. gives me nightmares still

This thread has a bad habit of reminding me of my biggest JRPG disappointment in the past few years: Blue Dragon. It disappoints me so much, because while playing it, I could feel that it had so much potential. The problem is that JRPGs thrive on telling a good story, and Blue Dragon's story is just... bad. The game also had the who's who of team members working on it from Akira Toriyama doing the art... I mean, he's just done little known projects in the past like Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest and this small manga known as Dragonball. Then there's this composer guy that you might know Nobuo Uematsu... I heard he's done some good work in the past! 😛 Given the travesty known as Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, I'm not sure if Sakaguchi is really worth mentioning, but he was the producer.

Speaking of the OST, this song from the OST is actually my second most listen to song on iTunes with nearly 600 plays! Although, I've been listening to this one as of late.

Hehe, it isn't a PS1 game, it is a Super Nintendo game(I have the box sitting next to me on my desk 😛). They ported it to the PS1 for one of the Final Fantasy collections they have. They added some CGI cutscenes, other then that you are looking at the awe inspiring glory of the SNES 😉

Not going to lie to you and say the random encounters get better, they don't, but I really think you would find it worthwhile to try and hang it out and get into the game a bit more. Maybe not, random encounters get tiring and I understand that.

Yeah I wasn't a huge fan of Blue Dragon, Mistwalker dropped the ball on that one, but they picked it back up and scored with Lost Odyssey in my opinion. That game was extremely well done and Uematsu also did the music. They even hired writers to write the memories you get in game. Extremely well done.

Lost Odyssey turned me off because of the first boss. The boss has to have the worst cheese factor that I've seen in a boss ever. He has this one move that can just devastate your entire team, and if you're lucky, he'll almost never cast it. However, if you're unlucky, he'll cast it multiple times in a row, and to put it quite simply, you're fucked. Also, you can't even heal properly! The only way I beat the fight easily was that I stopped using healing magic and used healing items, because items always go first in combat.

I tried playing the game again, and after playing Blue Dragon, I got a bit tired of the 3D aspect in in Lost Odyssey. I much prefer the free view 3D world in Blue Dragon over the very Final Fantasy VII-like aspect of Lost Odyssey.

It might be one of those games that you really need to play more past the beginning, but it's so hard for me to keep playing. It just never captures me.

The original Pokemons were solid games, but far more importantly from my perspective they brought an entire generation into the RPG fan community. They did what the original Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy series failed to do for anywhere outside of Japan, popularize a genre that I greatly enjoy. For that, I will always hold them in high regard. I played through them when they first came out to see what my kids were so excited about, and I didn't have to slog through them like I did so many other games.

must've had 10,000 random encounters.

I really don't want to turn this into a Random battle vs non random battle thread, but just a quick comment:

I totally agree with you Sandeagle. I tried playing FF3 not too long ago, and while the storyline seemed cool, but random battles were just painful. Nothing like taking you out of the storyline completely because you can't walk 5 feet without a random battle.

To tie this into the list: THIS is why I think CT is rated so high. I personally love CT and Secret of Mana very much because they did the battles differently. CT was very quick, much of the time the characters didn't even move and the battle started. Many of the battles could be skipped if you wanted, but fought if you wanted as well (maybe you had to touch an enemy, or go to a certain spot, or whatever). This gave the users some choice (which is the essence of an RPG, imo..), and yet still gave you a good taste of the battle systems.

The other thing it did was make the boss encounters more epic. I remember in FF7, the battles started more or less the same regardless of whether it was a big storyline impacting fight or another random battle (besides music). Chrono Trigger had these big fancy intros for many of the fights (magus??), and then the moment the battle window opened you had this sense of intensity that I enjoyed.

/shrug, maybe its just me. I know thers a lot of people that love the random battles, and thats totally fine. Not trying to convince, but that to me is one of the reasons why CT is rated so highly, that maybe people dont think about enough. It struck a good balance. Oh, and the story is awesome 🙂.

Interesting that Ultima didn't do very well in that list.. I would have figured that it would be high up even if I personally didn't really care much for the games.

I'm glad that FFVI got the nod. Not sure if Skyrim should be that high and I actually thought Diablo 1 was better that D2.

A huge letdown that I didn't see Panzer Dragoon Saga on the list. It's better than any of the other Sega RPGs out there and I played all of the Phantasy Star series. It came out to the states about the same time as FFVII with such a limited release on a doomed system. Having played both, PDS is the superior game to FFVII. While both have an engrossing story, PDS have better pacing/progression and no grinding.

Just FYI...I've played FF6 a few times, and it does deserve top 10. Nostalgia goggle need not apply.

I'm not sure how I feel about the rest of the list, but I gave up after looking at the top 10 because its a bitch to keep clicking through.

ah.. the threads of game hate.. game XXX sucks, I like game YYY much better.. How can OOO be listed in 10th, I dont like it..

news flash, game you dont like, doesnt mean others didnt like it too. Right now Im a bit boggled why "call me maybe" is even on the radio (before anybody jumps to conclusions, you cant not hear it, heck I think country and rap stations play it).. sombody is buying it, and maybe , just maybe while I dont like it.. somebody does.. does that make it a great song? (gosh I hope not.. it doesnt make it a bad song either (but we all know deep down inside it is 🙂 ))

with all that said.. I have played almost all of them (yes im old!) my lsit would be alot different, as with all lists they seem to be biased towards newer games as they are much fresher in the mind.. I know personally FF (any) wouldnt be in the top 10.. but thats just me.. PS

Wizardry 8? great game no doubt.. but totally dismissing the early games that basicly helped create the RPG on computers.. wow, just wow..Almost every great JRPG creator lists Wizardry (early ones) as the insperation, games that made them create more. (*wiz 7 is the best of the bunch)

EOB- none of the 3?
Black Crypyt-missing
Gold box series- SSI taking AD&D (grand daddy of all RPG's) to computers.. none?
Arcanum- probebly the last old school great RPG
realms of Arkaina-none on list?

there are so many

fable? while i liked the game alot its not really a RPG
Kindgdom hearts- common man!
WoW- lets suck up some more to Blizzard.. again great game and a RPG online thing.. but not for this list. (this gripe includes all online RPG's)

strat tactics rpg- hybreds not for the list.. just an opinon, again great games.. but..

this list is like other posters said, tyo get peopel click pages and ad counts for IGN and to annoy us in some way..

oh well.. guess it got me to gripe and add to all the other whinny posts 🙂

edit// doh console gaming. my rant does not apply, but will leave so you can all laugh at me. But then WoW is not on any console?

How did Asheron's Call not make this list? The game is closing in on 15 years of age and they still have thousands of subscribers.
