I was having a discussion with some female friends of mine, and I'm just curious to see what other people have to say about this. I'm not at all PC, but I personally wouldn't call my wife (if I was married) "The wife". For example, "The wife was mad at me because I came home from the bar wasted last night", or "I need to buy some flowers for the wife because I came home from the bar wasted last night". You get the picture. My friends also said they would be insulted if their husbands called them "The wife."

What do you people think?

My wife would signify ownership. Do you know for sure that they are not talking about someone elses wife?

The wife doesn't care too much for it when I say it in front of her, but I do talk about the wife to others.

Sometimes, I tell people "Gotta make the wife happy" or "The wife can be a pain every now and then"

My wife doesn't care as long as I make her happy by being there for her. She just doesn't like it too much if I am mean to her.
Example (I wouldn't do this): "The wife don't put out for me no more"

Hehe, it's pretty irritating, sounds like you're talking about an appliance with that expression. I don't think "my" necessarily implies ownership, rather a relationshiop with self, as in "my doctor".

I am so pleased that I can't speak to this topic. I am so happy that I live alone that I frequently (2-3 days a week) walk thru the door, throw my bag down and yell; "Honey, I'm home!" *wait for two seconds* Then I smile and say aloud; "Oh, that's right! I'm not so encumbered!" And I crack a beer, crank up the stereo and do whatever the hell I damn please.

I've cohabitated many times (if four can be counted as "many") Some were not as ball-busting as others, but all women are ball breakers, to be admired from afar; i.e. from their own place. MY GF can stay over for the weekend; I've no prob w/that. But moving in? "Che esto "moving in?" And I don't even speak Spanish! I get all ignorant and uniformed and confused when that topic comes up. Marriage = Not for me. Me = too stubborn, too neatfreak, too picky and too set in my ways. Always have a GF; you can return them to the recycle bin if need be. (That comment ought to upset the Gloria Steinhem wannabees! )
