I don't know, that's why I'm asking! No, I have no need for advanced server...I only have three boxes at home...but what the hell....

Advanced server would be slower because it has alot of crap running in the background. But you can turn most of them off so it could be faster.

Thanks, Czar...I was thinking kinda along the same lines; lots of "management" apps running in the background, but I was thinking maybe it's "optimized to optimize CPU power" or something like that. AS you can tell, I know nada about W2K Server. NE1 else have any (nice or helpful) thoughts?

one other thing, not sure of it though. But some of these services have a higher priority for the processor than foreground apps so it would slow games down even more.

Its not optimised or anything, it just has more stuff.

Ahhhh, you're right, Czar. Didn't think of that; it is, after all, a SERVER-optimized OS. Guess I'll just wait until I build my DDR rig later this month, to make the box I'm using right now, my server (gotta buy another case though). This hobby drives me nuts...always expertimenting..always spending money...always lovin' every damn minute of it! :D Have a great day.

Just dual boot.. I did that... and ended up hardly touching the server.. lost interest, but dualbooting is the best option.

Isn't it true that the Advanced Server takes like forver to boot? My friend installed it on one of his comps (granted, the PC wasn't top-of-the-line), and it took about 15 minutes to boot the machine :Q!

In my experience, even with all the options turned off or uninstalled, w2k adv server runs slower than w2k pro. I guess that's just the way the server platform is optimized.

I don't know about advance server, but server runs games great. HOWEVER, you must not only turn off the many services. The crucial step that most people don't do is this: you must also change your performace options to optimize performance for applications over services. It's a server os, so that's why services take priority as the default.
