Why would you need forums other than AT to discuss things that we talk about every day here on AT? Seems ridiculous. Plus it sounds like you're being too rigid and structured with it.

Well I find more interesting things at tivocommunity.com and ipod lounge because they're specifically for that. AnandTech is specifically for computers.

I don't think I'm too structured, I think you just need to break down different categories.

The main part of my forums are supposed to appeal to those who DJ and need advice and whatnot, or those who want TopGear episodes...

Running phpBB2 with MySQL for a fairly basic three-forum er.. forum :), which acts as a Knowledge Base for our company. Categories are Problem, Solutions and News.
Technical issues are posted in Problems; once resolved, they get cleaned up so, for example, they could be printed and faxed to a customer if they're long-winded, locked against further posts and moved to Solutions.

All in all it works quite nicely, and it's freeee :)

Just one forum for the 10 regular visitors to the forums, then I have 2 or 3 private forums for a couple of the members who wanted them for their personal friends... but they get about 2 posts a month.

Ok, first off, the forum isn't really a place for discussion, it's so people can get ftp information and download episodes from my ftp server (I don't have enough bandwidth to whore out to AT so therefore I discourage some people who wouldn't normally get Top Gear or hate it and just want to waste my bandwidth)

Second off, I don't care what other forums are out there that pertain to Top Gear. I'm giving away a free service, not a place to chit chat about it, so all in all it's better than the other top gear forums in my opinion.

I don't really offer anything special on my forums. It's more of a place I put up for my friends to chat about stuff. I've got Off Topic, Sports, TV & Movies, Music, and Computer forums. But nothing really to draw people to it that aren't directly notified by people that I know. I've only got 17 registered users, of which about 7 or 8 post with any sort of regularity.

Lifted that from your Word brochure?

Nope a simple copy/paste job, added the [ bullet ] and [ li ] took all of 2-3 minutes :)
