If you're picking the restaurant for a group dinner, what's the most expensive you can make it?

I'm picking a restaurant (See thread here)to hold a dinner for my girlfriend's 21st with a bunch of our friends and the only places left seem pretty expensive.

Since we're all going dutch (Except I'm paying for my girlfriend of course) and we're all 21ish, how much should I expect the others to be willing to pay for their own dinner?

I'd keep it under $20/plate. Seems resonable for a party.

I consider anything over $5 expensive and over $10 is like ultra, super duper expensive.

Depends on the people who are coming, and how cheap/poor/rich/whatever they are.

Also, go where your girlfriend likes to eat. Its her party, so it should be somewhere she enjoys.

Depends on the size. The "small plate" are reasonable, IMO.

Personally, I wouldn't eat anything off that menu. Nothing there sounds good at all.

Yeah...same here actually...which is weird since that place is really popular

I'd pick the restaurant and invite people. They can then decide how much is too much.

But 20-30 a plate is very reasonable. It is a special occasion ya know.

Something tells me that he'd like to go to someplace nicer than McDonald's for his GF's 21st birthday ;) :p

Because it's her 21st BD, you should go to a nice restaurant where alcohol is served. ~$20/plate is a good price for this kind of thing. A good idea is a restaurant that has cheaper plates like $10 as well as more expensive plates, this way your friends can decide.
Another thing you might do (because it's Dutch) is let your friends know what restaurant you've picked in advance, so they can weigh in with their opinion.

My junior prom, I took my date to a fairly nice resteraunt. I had it picked out, and then a whole group of her friends and their dates wanted to join us. I don't think they were too happy when they found out it was near $80 a couple w/ gratuity.

Senior prom was much better; better food, better resteraunt, and only about $60 a couple w/ gratuity.

Keep it under $20 for dinner and a drink.
Tell people it will be about $25 so they don't end up stiffing you or the waitor.

And how do reservations fall through? I would be mad as hell.

When we do birthdays for friends, we usually let the b-day person pick the place, then take them there and we all split their meal. It's never gone over $30 for a meal including everything. The person doing the picking is usually aware of the prices and keeps it within reason.

Wow.... I refuse to pay more than $20/plate.... Actually, the most I've ever paid is probably $15-$17.

Go to a Japanese place, I used to be a waitress at one, long time ago. There was a party of 10 that end up spending about $1400!!! Hmmm, I guess that's not that much now that I think about it....

Is there a Benihana up in northern Cal? It's about $20-30/person and you can split the plates too. And you get FREE entertainment!

for birthdays and stuff, we usually go to places where most of the entrees are around $20 (so total per person would come to $30-$40) but there's a few entrees in the $13 range so you can eat for under $20.
