If you're a sports junky, is NHL giving you the lovin' spoonful you need?

I have virtually no interest in sports but I tend to watch a lot of news. More accurately, the news in on most of the time and I rely on my subconscious to alert me of anything interesting. I mention this so you know in advance why I'm probably going to say some stupid shit.

It seems that football, both college and NFL, is on the ropes and probably out for the season. Last I heard, baseball wasn't having much better luck. But I just saw an add for the Stanley Cup playoffs, so that seems to be bucking the trend.

So if you're sports junky but not a hockey fan, is that helping you with withdrawal?

For some reason the local NBC channel isn't coming in for me lately so i haven't watched any NHL games. I used to like watching but i don't follow a team anymore so even when i could i haven't watched much the last several years.

Before the weather broke i was enjoying the reruns of NFL games & superbowls. If NFL & collage doesn't happen this year i wish they'd do some more of that from time to time.

I probably going to get a lot of slack for saying this but NFL football is like watching paint dry. If you're lucky, you get 15 secs of action then you wait 30 secs for the players to reset. With hockey, there's constant action.

Hockey is similar to NASCAR in that the only interesting parts are the crashes...and fights.

I mean OP you clearly have no clue WTF you are talking about.

MLB is doing just fine other than an outbreak or two earlier on.

NBA is flying high with literally like 0 cases out of thousands of tests in the past few weeks. Their playoffs are in the second round for the most part and doing great and there are some great games.

And NFL is going full head of steam and starts in about 10 days.

I am more of a Capitals fan than NHL fan in general and it's hard for me to watch random NHL games unless I have a rooting interest in them, even if it's rooting against teams. So I'm pretty much out on the NHL since the Caps sucked ass this playoffs. But NHL is my second favorite sport to watch when the Caps are playing. NFL is #1.

Different stroke for different folks. Only interesting part of football was the TD celebrations, but that got taken away. Only in recent years did they relaxed the rules a bit, but it's still a bore.

What? MLB is in full shedule. NBA playoffs are happening, so is Stanley Cup. Golf and MLS are playing and NFL starts in a few days.

Hockey is maybe the roughest, fastest and most dangerous of the major US Professional sports by a fairly wide margin. Every single part of that rink is harder than your skull, the players have knives on their feet plus the puck is hard as a rock too!

Having said that however, Hockey (especially pro's) is tough to appreciate unless you are watching it live IMO. The game moves so fast that you tend to lose the flow unless you can see the entire rink.

So in answer ... no I'm afraid not. :(

Same here ... although as a life long Rangers-fan I can't say I'm feeling all that sorry for you!

Hockey is by far the best sport to watch live. Just feeling the coolness in the air in the rink is nice and then hearing all of the sounds and how loud it is is so awesome. And as you mentioned, it is much faster in person.

I sat 4 rows behind the penalty box last year and that was my first time sitting close to the rink. And I could not believe how much faster it seemed down there than sitting higher up. It was like a different game. And from the angle we were at, we had a direct line of site from Ovechkin's office to the net, and it was just unreal watching him hit one timers from there and actually being able to see the puck travel directly to the net from that angle. Through all of the traffic and what not. And then to see how easily the goalie would just react and glove it was incredible as well.

I do disagree about it being the most dangerous. NFL is clearly the most dangerous and has the injury numbers to pretty much back it up. I think a lot of it is because of all the pads they wear and just the rules of the game. Don't get me wrong though, hockey is still dangerous, but I think those guys are more careful about the contact with eachother and rules don't allow for it as often without penalty.

But I'd say NHL players are the toughest of them for sure. I mean you have to be kind of crazy to put your body in between Ovechkin and a slapshot to try and block it.

Hockey is a lot of fun in person, but on TV? Eh... it's fine. It deserves to be more popular than it is.

Football has figured out the balance between too much scoring (basketball, volleyball) and not enough scoring (soccer, hockey, baseball), as well as having a short enough schedule that every game feels important. Golf has a good formula as well, but I've soured on it until they kick LIV to the curb. I really wish that new TGL had advertised more, I kept forgetting it was on. I really liked that format the one time I managed to catch it live. I hope it returns for another season.
