My boss decided to buy some "pathetic" classroom training w/ a national training company, no names, but you might guess who (NH)
anyway, we begged him to buy books instead of buying the classroom "joke training"...he decided to drop about 11k on classroom crap.
Now he says we have to take the classes on our own time.
Um, hello...I think we should take these on company time, if not he wasted his money, because I have a family and No free time after work.
What's your take?

Most of those training things are pretty much useless. They teach you a little, but I learn better being thrown to the wolves. A little on the job experience is my best learning tool. That being said, if they are free and paid for, I would take them just so you could pad your resume with them. In a sad sort of pathetic way, he is picking up the tab for you to better yourself and move on. I'd take advantage of it.

It would be NICE if you can take the training on company time, but, in this economy if the boss is willing to pay for training I'd go on my own time w/o a problem. Go with a positive attitude and you might even learn something.

Besides, if he bought you books, when would you have a chance to study those? During work--probably not with much progress.

Well, the problem is, I don't have the time after work, I have a child to look after,
I actually do pretty well with just books and reading them on the couch or in my home office. That way I am able to get studying/learning in while keeping an eye on the little one, put ther to bed around 8, read til 10 or so.
Easier than having to drive 45 minutes to "class" right when I get off work, the drive 45 minutes home at 10pm at night. Maybe I am just greedy, but I don't think so.
