If your mouse died, could you surf the web and use your PC normally?

The batteries in my mouse just went out and it made me wonder if I could browse normally without it. Do you know enough keyboard shortcuts and such to go on without your mouse?

btw, this post and poll were done w/o a mouse :p

Well, it'd be hard to do things in X, but text-mode apps would be fully usable without the assistance of a plastic rodent.

Nope, my keyboard doesn't have any working multimedia buttons, which would make opening my regular programs much harder.

hahah i got a job with the city of Fort Worth after i got out of college and they gave me a computer with windows, and the usual productivity crap from back in 1992, and NO MOUSE. I learned how to navigate eventually... windows 3.1 back then i think.

a few websurfing shortcuts:

BACKSPACE = Back
ALT + forward arrow = Forward
SPACE = page down
F5 = Refresh
TAB = move between hyperlinks and buttons
SHIFT + TAB = move backwards between hyperlinks and buttons

:D

you guys ever hear about MOUSEKEYS??

allows you to use your arrows as keys.

it's a little awkward and slow but it works.

No problem at all. I might be a tiny bit slower in getting to programs, but otherwise this wouldn't be hard at all. In fact, I do it whenever I go into safe mode since I have a USB mouse on Win98.

Yes. I used computers pre-mouse. I much prefer the mouse though ;)

I'd get a gerbil instead.

I have enough old mice to survive, just use my mouse from my laptop.
Don't think I'd even bother with out the mouse, I could live a while without using the computer.

I learned how to do it because one of my KVM switches is really flaky with one of my servers, so I often have no mouse and it's not worth the downtime to reboot for mouse functionality. I can do almost everything with the keyboard, however, I occasionally find something that you simply cannot do with the keyboard alone. I call that bad programming/UI design. Speaking of that, why in the hell does the active spot jump to the ad ad the top of this page when I hit tab after typing my reply, rather than straight to the "Reply to Topic" button below?

I cut my web teeth on Windows 3.1 so navigating with only the keyboard has become second nature to me.:)
