If you in your home, and you have music playing loud and cops show up, are you required to show ID? What rights do you have in other situations (cops show up randomly, etc. etc.)

You don't ever HAVE to show ID, except when you're doing something that requires it, like driving. US citizens are not required to carry ID.

Exactly! Cooperate with the law whenever possible. "Sure officer you can search my house too.". "Sure Mr. FBI agent I will come with you for questioning". "Sure Mr. NSA man, here confisicate my computer"

Because I shouldn't be forced to ID myself to anyone I don't want to. Not even police. I think the law says that once they detain you, you have to tell them your name. If you lie about who you are that's a crime I believe. I'm not sure on any of this though.

This is apparently from my thread.

I familiarized myself with the laws in my state. Except for when you are driving a vehicle you never have to present identification. No if's and's or but's.

If they threaten to arrest you, call their bluff.

Yep, that's what ACLU says too.

I would show my id. I have nothing to hide. What is it going to harm by the guy looking at my id which I carry with me in my back pocket at all times. Its not inconveniencing me at all. Not showing my id could lead to more trouble than its worth. I'll pick and choose my battles, trying to be ass about showing my id is not worth fighting over. Thats my opinion.

Agreed- It's pathetic that it comes down to that sometimes...

How about if your home security system loses contact with the security office, who dispatches the police upon no answer at the phone number for verification that it is not a false alarm or intentional problem?

(We were recently moving some electrical and phone cabling in our basement and our security office called us when the security system lost power & then telephone)

I thought that's how you get arrested for vagrancy.. (no ID on you on public + cops want to be dicks)

it was over an argument about whether or not a cop could knock on your door and ask for your id.

what about underage drinking in your own home? Can they randomly knock on your door (let's say they are tipped off by someone who doesn't like you or something) and demand ID?

The point is if you don't show your ID it SHOULDN'T lead to more trouble. The more people just cooperate with cops the more they think they can just intimidate and demand things they don't have a right to demand. Effectively, I feel it's my responsibility to exercise my rights so cops don't feel like they can do anything they want.

If it's just a warning, I really don't think you have to show an ID. But if they are going to issue a summons, you probably have to show your ID to verify that you are a primary resident of the apartment/house.

Me and my buddies as kids used to get harassed by cops all the time always asking for ID. most of us never carried school IDs so the cops would give us the third degree for 15-20 minutes. Those who had IDs usually had their names run to see if they were wanted (probably just to scare us). In those situations, it was just better to show them the ID.
I've been at parties where the cops asked people to exit the premises to check out their IDs. Some people refused to exit the house, and the cops couldn't do anything about it because the owner didn't let the cops in.
those poor bastards that exited the house got hassled or taken downtown. Don't step out of your house, don't invite them into your house, and don't feel compelled to 'hand' them your ID, cause they'll keep it and draw you out.

Of course not, expect them to be less friendly to you though if you using your rights irritates them.

When I was going over my flight information recently, I was disturbed to see the statement "Be sure to have your government-issued photo ID with you." I seem to recall reading somewhere that the DL was not supposed to be required as such my name, so is something else coming down the turnpike?

if you identify yourself that's all that matters i believe, you arent required to show ID in your own home unless there is a report of breaking and entering or something like that

showing drivers license is only required if you are in a car and get pulled over, then you have to show proof of license
