When I can afford gifts, I do. When I can't, I don't feel bad. I tend to be the default Chef for family gatherings so, I feel like I've contributed something.

We always discuss presents before hand. Both a dollar amount and who is getting them so no one is left out or caught unaware.

I've been giving gifts for my parents ever since I got a full time job and could afford them. They've never really gave anything in return but I don't care one bit. I could never repay them for what they've given me.

yes.

nothing more awkward when someone gives you something and you have nothing to give back... that's kinda why I bake holiday cookies. I send them off to my friends and keep a few boxes around just in case; whatever is left-over after christmas gets taken to work for my coworkers.

Yep- always have, always will. It's the best part of the holiday :) It causes laughter, memory, joy...everything we're supposed to be celebrating.

I gave out IOUs one year. That got some laughs. The second year I did it, it had lost its humor.

Depends on which family member and if you are going to meet them in person or not. I have some aunts and uncles that sometimes get me small presents like money or something and I hardly ever see them. They live on the other side of the country. We don't always reciprocate and get them something. We used to always get everyone in the family something but this got too expensive and it was collectively agreed that we would cut back and just give to those closest to us and the occasional gift to others here and there. If I'm going to see them in person though, say at a party, then yeah I do feel like I should get them something.
