Hope Grant is great. If your at least half time and in the first 2 years of college (or tech school) you can get up to $1500 back. This is a return not a deduction. Go to the link and see if you qualify. I worked part time while going to school last year and I got every cent I payed during the year back, over $1200.

Even if you already have your taxes done if you qualify you can file an admenment and get the full refund. If you are still filed as a dependant of your parents then you parents can get the return. Please check this out, it is worth the few minutes to read it over.

I can answer basic questions about the grant, just ask or PM me.

-- If this works out for you, you can buy me a hot dog at the next Annual AnandTech Forum Picnic.

Matt <-- can eat tuns of hot dogs.

Anyone is school should quailify...we need to push to have the rules changed. It helps people in their first two years, but others need it their 3rd and 4th too.

FettsBabe there is another grant out there for years 3 and 4. It is not as good as Hope but it helps. To bad I cant remember what it is called. Call your local H&R Block, they should be able to tell you what it is. It to is geared to mid to low income students.

BBD I would say yes. I cant find anywhere that it limits how many times you use it. I am NOT a tax expert though so I could be wrong.

I found the link for Lifetime Learning Credit Which is the program for years 3 and UP. Not as good as Hope but still very good for us poor folk. :)

You should have gotten a form from your school called 1098-T that looks some what like a W-2. Bugg your school if you didnt get it get one.It would state that you were at least a half time student. Then you have to fill out form 8863 and attach it to your 1040.

Or you could to go H&R Block like I did and have them to all the damn forms for you. It cost me $32 for them to take care of it. I can do simple tax forms but I was afraid I would miss checking one box and miss out on it.

Yeah they shouldn't give you anything extra back.

None of the school exemptions are valid for use by married students. --Which seems TOTALLY backwards to me.
