Divx allows AC3,MP3,MP2 for audio. Video size has to be in multiples of 2. There is also bitrate requirements for both. Anything else is considered breaking the format.

Xvid is an open standard so people tend to do what they want.

The problem isn't with audio formats because there are so few in use with video. Support MP3 and AC3 and you got about 95% covered. The problem is video, there are a couple hundred different formats to encode video, and then the various options that each format has is hard to deal with.

That is great if all you do is watch movies on your pc. It sucks though if you use the pc in a work environment where you have to know each and every codec installed and have to make extra sure that each codec you install does nothing to effect the others. You can't just go installing every codec out there just in case you get a file that needs it.

...there's like seven pages to this thread, so i dunno if someone already addressed this.

MKV is not a video format, its a container like avi.

You probably are using FFDShow to decode it, buy coreAVC or obtain it...somehow.

You should be golden.

PDF is a good choice. There's a few I'd like to see gone. Quicktime, Real Media, and PDF are the top contenders for elimination.

I couldn't function without PDF. The problem with PDF is it's been too successful and has bloated itself far beyond it's original, intended role.

As a format to transfer files between print professionals that will print reliably, it's stellar and rock-solid. The only trouble in that arena is that it's not foolproof - if you don't know what you're putting into the PDF, you can't be sure what you'll get out.

The addition of all the crazy multimedia BS in PDFs has diluted it's reputation, but not it's core function. Lots of people use PDF in ways PDF isn't intended. You're not supposed to edit them ? don't get me started on PDF forms.

Quicktime and RM I'm totally on board with sending down the toilet.

Same here. EVERYBODY in the legal world (and most other document dependent industries) lives, breathes, and dies in PDF. MOV & RM can (and do) suck it, though.

Uh, XML is worthless? Really? I'm curious, what would you rather have in place of XML?

I hope you don't use RSS feeds..

That openXML format MSFT came up with for their word sweet. Couldn't even use the XML standard for date and time. They want to use their own bastardized format that exposes what POS Word really is.

Now that .mov is natively supported in Windows 7, I'm going to go with .flac - not because it's a bad format, but .flac fanboys piss me off.

Another vote for *.mov. Truely a shitty format.

PDF is actually ok, it's just adobe reader that sucks. Use foxit. I hate Adobe software.

It's steadily becoming the backbone not only of the internet but of information sharing in general!

.wmv - Please MS let us use our own video and audio codecs and stop handcuffing us to yours!!
.7z - Yes I know 7 zip has one of the best compression ratios but with todays massive HDs and fast internet speeds I find the time needed to compress and uncompress large 7z files more annoying than anything
.doc - thankfully I think MS has moved to an xml standard haven't they?
.raw - image format. OK what I mean by this is that there needs to be ONE standard RAW format that every camera manufacturer and image editor uses not this proprietary forest of RAW formats we have now.

I'm not a fan of .exe

Nothing should be executable and we should all go spend some time outside and breathe in the fresh air.

.AVI

It is more a package for files than a format itself though.
I hate deciphering what codec a AVI used, there are some really odd ones out there.

If the creators of avi had their way MP3 would mean mp3, ac3, flac, wav, pcm and anything else that made a sound.

So you'd want your movies to come as .divx.mp3 or .motionjpeg.ac3?

Yes . Then I would know what I can use to play it without having to strip out the four cc code and hunt for a codec. Divx is a good example. If I have a dvd player that is divx certified and the media creator uses the certified profile, I know it will always play.

Adding the audio format would not be required as each video standard already has an accepted audio standard .

AVI has allowed people to use whatever they feel like and hope the other party can play it.

What's the accepted audio standard for divx video then? Cause I've seen ac3 2.0, ac3 5.1, and mp3 with divx. Then there's xvid.

I'm not sure there is a certified audio standard is there? Even for certified divX video it's a complicated mess see here:

http://labs.divx.com/node/72

My guess is, if there is a standard audio codec it would be MP3.

Oh, and pdf haters can bite me. Yes, Adobe Reader sucks donkey balls, but there are plenty of alternative programs that read pdf format just fine. It really is useful.

.pdf is really useful if the goal is to bug the crap out of the reader. Let's make a document that looks like a word processing document yet retains none of the redeeming qualities of a word processing document. It will be bloated, difficult to select and copy text from, contain a bizarre layout scheme, and be designed to be opened with a program containing a plethora of totally useless tools.

I used to hate PDF, but now I've come to realize it's a necessary evil. MOV, on the other hand, needs to be destroyed.
