wouldn't you be incinerated by hot gases or crushed by gravity before you even finished the thought?

Any star that you could stand on would absolutely crush you to death instantly.

But If you had a magic heat resistant material that you could make into a space suit and a hang glider, you could easily fly over or through some of the largest stars. You could probably fly off of the very largest stars too, since they have stellar winds that move at about 2500km/s. You might have a hard time with that glider though, just about any star is hot enough easily vaporize the element with the highest melting point, tungsten. But, if you could somehow get down to a star's lower atmosphere you might find temperatures cold enough for a tungsten glider to not melt instantly.

A black dwarf star might be survivable, at least so far as the "burning to death" thing is concerned.
Gravity would still be a problem though.

Not sure about incineration, but is that the reason for the teardrops on your guitar?
