If you were worried about OCing . . .

Hi all,

I recently built a new i5 2500k rig with the Asus p8p67 pro mobo and I'm running a hyper 212 HSF. The intention here was to take advantage of the amazing overclocking capabilities of the 2500k.

So, up pulls UPS about 30 minutes before I have to leave for work yesterday, and I spend all day with thoughts on my new build. I finally get home, put everything together, tidy the case up, get win 7 up and running, install all of my 3rd party must-haves, migrate my files from the old PC . . . .
and realize it's 4 AM.

This morning, I woke up, ready to jump headfirst into my first OC adventure, so I pull up anandtech, a few more sites for research, and que a page or two up on my EVO for reference while in the BIOS. I restart and hold down delete and boot into my BIOS, switch to advanced mode, and click on the first line to read the description.

The next thing I know, my computer restarts, does not POST, then restarts again. I'm close to freaking out as I have never overclocked before. Just a few seconds later (faster than before), the computer boots into windows. Not sure what had happened, I open Prime95 and start a test, and observe CPU-Z while testing.

Much to my surprise, I now have a ~4.4 GHz processor. 42 x 103.

I never, ever, thought I'd say this, but . . .

I just accidentally overclocked my PC by 1.1 Ghz.

It seems OCing really is as easy as clicking a button these days.

ROFL

Overclocking so easy even your grandmother can do it!

In a serious note.. we need to see voltages to see if you do indeed have whats called a safe overclock.

Download this program and run it with admin privilages:
http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

Then come back and tell us the values its reporting for voltages and your core temps.

Overclocking is like driving really fast. You can do both without knowing how to do it. However when you crash (and you will), you (hopefully) begin to learn how to do it without crashing. The nice thing (v.s. driving) about overclocking is you can live to tell about it!

Thanks for the reply.

VCore is at 1.27

temps are as follows:
Core 0 - 50
Core 1 - 56
Core 2 - 53
Core 3 - 49

I'm not sure what the other voltages mean, but I'll list them for you anyway.

VIN1 - 1.02
AVCC - 3.38
3VCC - 3.36
VIN4 - 1.02
VIN6 - 0.80

This is all under a short time at full load

If I were you, I'd reset your OC a bit so that BCLK is at 100.0. Seems like its not worth getting things out of kilter on the BCLK when the SB system really wants it to stay 100. Better to kick up the CPU multi by 1 more if you want more speed than to futz around with BCLK. For some reason the Auto OC functions still mess with BCLK (because in the "old days" that was apparently how you OCed stuff!)

If I remember correctly my P8P67 Pro defaulted to 103.. Had to manually set it to 100 ..
