top is always the best. less noise. as an added bonus, when I lived in Dallas they had the meters wired wrong so my downstairs neighbor was paying my electric bill ;)

Definitely the top. Sucks when you're moving in, but after that you only have your next-door neighbor and your below-floor neighbor as likely noise sources. Fewer bodies that way.

Since I have had the joy of lugging a friends fold-out sofa up (and then down from when he moved out 4 months later) to his 3rd floor apt in Dallas, I swore 1st floor always.

Moving into the 3rd floor is a bitch, but once you're moved in it's nice. You'll usually have vaulted ceilings as a result of being on the top and no one above you to listen to all day and night.

It sucks having vaulted ceilings come time to use the heater.

Actually the third floor sucks, especially if you buy alot of groceries or big products. I was single when I lived on the third floor and it was a pain.

I enjoyed living on the first floor.

Third floor. 3 floors is nothing, you're a wuss if you can't handle a 3 floor walkup.
First floor sucks. Street noise is terrible.
Second floor is ok, but you may have asshole upstairs neighbors like I do.

I've lived in a third-floor apartment in a 3-story building for the past year or so.

moving in sucked. we also don't have any couches because of the effort required to carry them up and brind them back down whenever we move.

if I were looking for an apartment today, I'd probably look for a first-floor apartment (assuming it's set back from the street). if the front door in your living room opens right out onto the street, I'd go with the second floor.

Only ever lived in one apartment, it was on the first level, but it was half underground. My windows were about chest level inside, ground level outside. Our heat/electric bills were always pretty low, and the noise wasn't bad. The only noise we could hear was when the girls above us were having sex (presumably with guys, but not in our minds).
