If you were somehow stranded on a deserted island all by yourself with only a pocket knife and the clothes and shoes on your back, would you be able to survive long enough to be rescued?

Considering the island is mostly covered with tropical forests and filled with abundant wildlife, and freshwater although it might not be clean.

If I was on a desert island with a pole I would find a woman to dance with it.

I would like to say that I could survive with fresh water, foliage, and wildlife; but who knows. Things happen, and I could get bitten by an exotic bug and die in the first minutes on the island.

Loving being around nature doesn't mean squat. Most people love nature. I mean, we are animals, right. But most of us who do rough it, bring flashlights and a tent, at least. It is very different if you have nothing but a pocket knife.

Unless you are a Eagle scout, a Navy Seal, Army Ranger, Marine, or something of that nature, I would say it would be very difficult to adapt. I am surprised so many people in ATOT believe they could survive. I highly doubt it. I think I could unless something unforeseeable happens. You can survive on eating ants and grubs for a long time with fresh water. And then if you are resourceful enough, you can find other ways of getting sustenance.

with a pocket knife you could make your own shelter.
you don't need a tent.

make a fire to cook your food.

you'd be amazed at what folks will do in order to survive.

everyone has a survival instinct.

edit: it also helps that I go camping on a regular basis and love it. learning a bunch of new things about surviving in nature in the process

I love camping myself and "roughin' it". Again, though, I doubt that the 75%, 18/24 people that voted, in ATOT could actually survive.

BTW making a fire from scratch is quite difficult to do. It is something you must learn to do, most people think they can do it but it is quite difficult when you first learn to do it. Finding dry tinder and wood is hard enough in dense forest (Most of it is damp and useless). Even the people in Survivor have more equipment than what is provided.

Shelter is still a problem. You can make a decent shelter without a pocket knife using foliage, letting it dry and using the fibers to make rope. Use small branches and tie them together. But all this takes a lot of time, and plenty of training. Otherwise, what are you going to do, chop down a tree and make plywood? The most you could do within the first couple of days is find dry foliage the pack as bedding, or natural shelter, and that doesn't fend against wildlife at all.

Food is not a problem. You can eat most bugs for sustenance. Until you figure out other means of food.

**EDIT**
now the Poll is 28/34

yeah, it would be hard, but you could do it, plus knowing that whole string tied to a stick and spining the other stick on a log to make a fire thing would be helpful.....

That trick is hard to do. Most people think it just needs two pieces of wood and a string, but that isn't true. You first must find two pieces of hard, but extremely dry wood. And more importantly, a good source of tinder (dried leaves or moss that is highly flamable). And even then it takes hours to do if you aren't experienced.

You expect we believe you can pull off survival if you can't even spell your own username right?

i know certain things are not the easiest to do and we take a lot for granted. but you would be amazed at what determination can do. i don't think you are giving ATOT enough respect (as in i'm sure there are more folks then you think which might survive)
